Pored into a snifter on 9/12/10

Batch 9433

Hues of copper, dull crimson & scorched amber make for rustic looking beer. Couple that with over a finger of light, sandy brown head & Consecrator is a visually appealing beer. Too bad the foam doesn't last last long, dropping to a thin layer & ultimately, a collar of retention. Lace tries to catch hold after each drink but generally falls back down the glass.

The aroma is nice & malty, suggesting sweetness with a touch of spice. Baked dark bread (possibly pumpernickel?), brown sugar, a nice toffee drawl, hints of caramel & faint wisps of spices. Subtle earthy undertones, most notable when the glass is swirled.

Consecrator starts off with a sugary bent, the flavors corresponding with the nose: caramel; brown sugar; toffee & maybe even a molasses twinge. In this respect it's almost barleywine-esque. Despite being sugary, I don't find it too sweet. Half way through each sip notes of dark bread move in briefly & are quickly followed decent hop bitterness that really dries out the beer toward the finish. I think the progression form sweet to bitter & dry is great.

Medium-full in body with appropriately moderate carbonation. The feel is good; just enough carbonation to accentuate the bitterness on the finish. Hints of toasted bread linger.

At 8% abv, I thought it might be kind of boozy; it isn't. I picked up a six pack so I could hit a "want" as an extra in a trade, not knowing what to expect of the beer. I split a bottle with an old friend over cigars & other beers. I was surprised at how tasty it was & how well it held up to the cigar. Now that I've had a bottle on a fresh palate, I'm all the more impressed.

Pours a murky super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of malt, dark fruit, toffee, leather, tobacco, soy sauce, and slight cardboard aromas. Taste is much the same with dark fruit, leather, tobacco, soy sauce, and slight cardboard flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with interesting leather, fruit, and tobacco characteristics all around.

A: Pours an almost opaque yet still clear dark reddish brown in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and some amber + copper highlights. The beer has a half finger tall dense foamy tan head that reduces to a large patch of thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of sweet caramel malts and dark fruits (cherry, fig, and plum).

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of sweet caramel and toffee malts with moderate amounts of dark fruits present as well - cherry, fig, and plum. Light amounts of earthy + herbal hops which impart a touch of bitterness in the finish. There is a light to moderate amount of alcohol similar to what you would find in a brandy.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with low to moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: While this beer is sweet, it is not cloying and it is a very good example of the style. I enjoyed this one but it is a definite slow sipper.
