Appearance - Pours nearly 2 fingers of light golden tan head, you can hear the effervescence as you pour, body is a translucent red copper, with lots of carb in the body. The beer retains a solid cap throughout the session.
Smell - Dark ripe fruits, dark roasted toffee, fresh baked wheat bread, very light amaretto, and a light vanilla carmel.
Taste - Very much like the nose, this starts off with sweet dark ripe fruits and dark toffee, and right behind you get a semi-sweet baked dark wheat breadiness, then a hint of alcohol and amaretto flavor joins in, then very light breadcrusts and some faint minerals, and finally a hint of grassy hops that round out a lightly bitter finale. But this does not finish clean, and I like this here - nearly all of these flavors remain in the mouth (especially the corners) long after each sip.
Mouthfeel - The level of sweetness and bold flavors make this a medium weighted beer, the carb is lighter side of medium and silky smooth, almost foaming across the tongue, but then leaves some nice tingling edges at the sides.
Overall - Really a well done dopplebock imho, just delicious, a very nice balance of flavors, all complimentary. While this is definitely a sweeter beer, the boldness of the dark fruits, roasted malts, grassy hops and light minerals, and even the faint alcohol heat all balance out the sweetness perfectly - I don't consider this overly sweet or syrupy in the least. Glad I got a case of this, will definitely pick up another case next spring - highly recommend.
