LOOK: Clear amber colored lager with a light head and little to no lace. Good clarity and color for the style.

SMELL: Robust malty aroma with hints of nuts, brown sugar and toast. There is also a bit of dark fruit and raisin to it.

TASTE: More vinous than the nose, the taste is dialing in fig, date and raisin notes complimented by a sugary, toasty malt base. Moderate bitterness holds true with a grassy, citrus laden hop character.

FEEL: Medium bodied brew with a perfect medium-high carbonation. Finishes on the cleaner side but some malty residue hangs on for a nice ride on the palate.

OVERALL: A classic American take on the Doppelbock style. Fresh tasting and quite good to toast over good food and good friends.

A deep tawny color, this dopplebock dark but relatively clear. The smell is all malt, rich and with depth. There is some distant dark fruit as well. the taste is malty, and a little roasted quality. Some bitterness, and very full in body. The beer is flavorful and very enjoyable. It's a solid dopplebock.

I have trouble believing that I have never had this doppelbock from Bell's, until now.

Appearance -The beer was a dark murky brown with a small amount of bubbles hugging the sides of the pints glass.

Smell - The smell was faint, but did suggest a mild malty aroma.

Taste - In the beginning, I detected toffee and malt sweetness. The sweetness becomes progressively more bitter until the burnt sugar ending is reached. In the overall scope of doppelbock, I thought the sweetness of this one did not last long enough.

Mouthfeel - I often think of doppelbocks as being "chewy". I might argue that this one is a little thin.

Overall - I am a fan of the style and this is a pretty good example of the style. I think it hits a lot of the benchmarks, but does not hit them very hard.

This is my first encounter with a dopplebock so its a little hard to judge this without a point of reference, may return to review again at a later date. This lager pours a brown hazelnut color with very little head or lacing. The aroma is very malty and warming with notes of dried fruit and a little toasted malt. The mouthfeel is a little sticky and close to full bodied. The flavor is rich and deep, lots of malt, almost a fruitcake like quality, and a nice warming alcohol bite. This is a nice beer especially on a cold day. I look forward to trying more of the style to get a better idea of what they should be like.

On tap at The Village Tavern in Geneseo, NY.

Pours a clear hazelnut brown, with a very small half inch head, and not much lacing down the glass.

Smells like sweet malt, dark fruits, and some caramel.

The taste is similar. A bit lighter in flavor than some of the typical German dopplebocks, but still tasty. Fairly sweet, with minimal toasted malt flavor. Some dark fruit flavor, cherry, and caramel.

Medium bodied overall, but light bodied for a dopplebock. Low carbonation, slightly sticky mouthfeel.

This one's pretty good, but could be beefed up a little bit, seems like somewhere in between a bock and a dopplebock.
