Notes/Commercial Description:
One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell's history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Pitch black with minimal coffee colored head. Carbonation is retained around the edges for the life of the drink.

Scents of leather, black licorice, chocolate, espresso.

Great flavor. Robust coffee, licorice, light soy. Earthy leather and tobacco.

Mouthfeel is thinner than I could have hoped for. Thick, but not viscous. Smooth. Low carbonation.

A great beer, no doubt, but considering the hype and lengths one must go through to get it, it disappointed.

Cheers to Bilco for sharing this

Review from notes, 4/18/14

Appearance: Dark, deep brown - pours with a wispy, light brown head, leaves some nice spots of lacing

Smell: Huge chocolate and some nice bourbon - smells very, very rich - big chocolate malts, with burnt and roasty notes, and some some caramel - some dark fruits and a ton of bourbon - chewy caramel, chocolate cake - decadent to say the least

Taste: Even bigger than the aroma - big, chewy malts - sweet caramel, molasses, and dark, roasty malts - chocolate in all forms, with semisweet chocolate, dark chocolate, and some milk chocolate - lots and lots of bourbon, but this mostly works - woody with some booze, demands to be sipped

Mouthfeel: On the full side of medium, or the light side of full - adequate carbonation, smooth

Overall: More appealing than a brown note

This was a beast. It was bigger than I expected. At least an hour should be devoted to sampling this beer, even if you split the bottle. It a bit bourbon-heavy, but I would try this again.

A - Jet black and inky with a dark tan head.

S - Can definitely get the bourbon off the aroma here! Some dark chocolately, raisany notes down there as well.

T - Complex, dark, the taste lingers for a bit and increases in complexity with something extra coming out at the end.

M - The 'weak' point of the beer as its slightly thin.

O - A great beer to sit around and sip.
