12 oz. bottle poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass (February 26, 2010). Rear label says it's batch "9423" and the Bell's website says that it was "packaged on October 22, 2009." This was part of a mixed six pack of Christmas seasonal brews picked up at Armanetti Wine Shoppe and Beverage Mart in Chicago.

Eyes: Pours a very hazy deep orange with hues of red. Almost one finger head forms and dissipates in under a minute. A significant stream of bubbles arises from the etching on the bottom of the glass.

Nose: A soft combination backed bread and caramel, but a very modest profile overall.

Tongue: Malty, sweet. Actually tasted a bit metallic, some earthy components here, and a hint of hops. There is only a hint of the nutty spiciness that usually accompanies Christmas offerings.

Mouth: Medium body, decent carbonation.

Libation: I must admit it doesn't scream Scottish Ale. Very drinkable, but kind of average in almost every area. Goes down easy, but not memorable.

Picked up a growler at 1 for the Road yesterday. Kept it cold and dark, so it should be alright. This is my first Scottish Ale, so bear with me.

Poured into a pint glass, the head recedes rather quickly, leaving just a dusting on the surface. It's a nice, deep brown-red. Lots of tiny bubbles rush to the top.

On the nose, the malt is most apparent. Not overly woody or chocolatey, or anything for that matter. Very tame, but with just a bit of sweetness and spicey hops.

The taste is definitely a winner for me. You wouldn't expect it from the smell, but this is decently complex. The body of the taste is sweet, spiced fruit, and almost funky malt. Balance that with a hint of spice on the aftertaste, a smooth, smooth mouthfeel, and you'll get a rather tasty option for the winter months.

I could use a little more to the nose, to really bring out the subtleties in the taste, but hey - it's nice to curl up with a growler-full of a great, sessionable beer and share with a friend. Happy holidays.

Appearance: Pours a dark amber with a thick frothy tan head with lots of lace.

Smell: Bready and very lightly spiced. It is not what I was expecting.

Taste: Again not what I was expecting. Not bad though. All of the flavors seem muted a bit and nothing stands out in any way. I get a faded out hop flavor and some malt.

Mouthfeel/drinkability: Medium to medium-light body and medium carbonation. Rather dry.

Bell's makes some quality beers, unfortunately this one does fall into that category. This was poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Transparent Copper color with little to no head/carbonation. Looks and taste is on par with a yuengling lager except more bitter. The ibu on this beer is on the high side exceptionally hoppy coming in at 80 as if it were an IPA. Slight Christmas spices, can't pick out a distinct one though. A Christmas session beer.

Pours gold and copper, a little less orange than I expected
Leaves a solid 1 finger tan/cream head

Smells is interesting, malty and I swear I could smell banana.

Taste is mostly malt forward, a little bit of fruity, not bitter hop character, not very complex, no real lingering finish flavors.

Medium to light body, with solid carbonation, a smooth fast finish.

Easily drinkable, overall a solid beer, but I don't think it really fits the style, seems closer to an ESB mixed with and American Pale Ale, not the sour and bitter character of a Scottish Ale.

Poured a golden amber color with a 1 finger off white head
Very mild smell along with the taste, light toasted malts, coriander and a touch of hops.
Mouthfeel was light on the carbonation with an almost flat finish.
Very good over all and worth a try

Bought a single bottle.

It was a very dark Amber with a big head. Really nice lacing.

Smell was not impressive.

A little bitter, maybe too much carbonation. Nice flavor. For a beer titled Christmas Ale, I expected more flavoring.

I could drink a bunch of these, especially on Christmas. But I wouldn't pay more than $20 for a case of this stuff.
