Notes/Commercial Description:
Sour mash wheat ale.

"Designed as a flavorful session beer, Oarsman Ale uses a classic German brewing technique to impart a light, refreshing tartness. Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy portion of wheat, while light hopping lend citrus & herbal notes to the aroma. Fermented with Bell's house ale yeast, Oarsman comes in at 4.0% alcohol by volume. Rather than being the dominant flavor note, the tartness in Oarsman takes on more of a palate-cleansing role, making it perfect with meals or purely on its own."

A: Lots of bubbles, half a finger head, yellow cloudy body, zero lacing.

S: I smell wheat and lemon.

T: Wheat, lemon, a bit of funk and sourness but not much, orange or lemon zest towards the end. Very mild flavor.

M: High carbonation, light and refreshing

O: It's a very refreshing and light beer. Nothing impressive or anything but I could probably drink this all day long during a hot summer day.

Bottle from Siciliano's, 12oz into a tulip. Bottled February 8, 2012.

Lightly hazy yellow, thin head with a film of retention, and a collar. Nose has a light tartness, some graininess, a bit crackery and doughy. Perhaps a bit of lemon citrus, but this is quite mild. Not a ton of flavour initially, but opens up into some tart lemon and wheat and pale malts, again crackery and light. A bit of sweetness in there too. Flavour disappears almost as soon as it came, not much else too this. Light and refreshing, and I could easily put back many of these on a hot patio.

Had on-tap at New World Brewery. Poured into pint glass.

A: Pours a cloudy, very pale light yellow. A ring of foam forms instead of a head. Some visible carbonation.

S: I get a somewhat wheat-y, light sour aroma.

T: Lemony sour flavor. Not much sweet character to set the sourness off.

M: Light mouthfeel, but expected for the style. Dry finish.

O: Good, but there are better Berliners. NOTE FOR MYSELF - I forgot I reviewed this one already. Had it out of a bottle, and my review notes were almost identical, other than the beer was much more clear in appearance than it was on tap.

A: pale yellow, hazy, a little carbonation. one finger head that quickly dissipated to nothing.

S: slight citrusy smell. Can't tell it completely but some type of citrus.

T: Kind of weak taste. Has a bitter/sour bite at the end almost as an aftertaste that tastes kind of like lemons? maybe limes? oranges? Not sure obviously. After it warmed a little I was able to find that tart taste I sought. Definitely more of a lemon flavor at that point as well.

M: Bubbly. light. Not much to it.

O: Not my favorite beer. Memorable beer because of the fact I haven't had one like it yet. It will give me something to compare to. May buy one here and there just for fun.

A - Slightly less than a fingers worthy of fizzy white head comprised of medium to large sized bubbles that quickly fizzes away leaving only the slightest of collars... The color is a very pale orange amber... A very very slight haze... A limited amount of moderate paced small bubbled carbonation rise along the sides of the glass with a couple of quick streakers in the center of the glass...

S - Orange zest... A slight bit of tart... Just a smidgen of wheat... Very subdued, perhaps even a bit timid...

T - Watered down orange juice... Some orange zest... A very faint lactic acid component... Some slightly spicy wheat character...

M - Prickly carbonation... Light bodied... A bit chalky... Uninspired...

D - I'm a huge fan of Berliner Weissbier, but this one misses the mark... Average at best in all facets... A bit of a disappointment... Lacks the refinement, nuance, and character that I look for in the style...
