Once a year we scour the climbing vines of the local hopyards for the perfect hops to brew our Harvest Ale. Using only Michigan-grown hops, this amber-colored brew finds the delicate balance between hops and malt. It offers a full and robust flavor, yet still manages to be light on the tongue.

Bottle into tulip
Bottle #181
Bought at the Bell's General Store

A- Clear dark amber pour with a two finger soapy off white head. Slowly deflates to a thin messy cap leaving chunks of sticky lacing around the rim.

S- Sweet malts up front with a slight citrus and floral hop bouquet. There isn't something that stands out more than the other. There is a digestive cookie presence that works well with everything.

T- Floral hops with a touch of grass. Digestive cookie continues in the taste. It's bitter enough to make me smile yet not kill the palate so you can't enjoy the rest of the beer. Quicky dry, bitter finish.

M- Little lighter than medium bodied. Nice and chewy for a APA and has wonderful carbonation.

From my notes.

This pours a warming amber-tan color with decent foaming.

The aroma is spicy, earthy, with dry, grassy straw notes.

For a harvest ale this doesn’t “pop” the way I had expected. There’s some straw and earthy-orange citrus flavors, balanced enough of a caramel-malt backbone so that nothing really stands out in the combination.

Poured into a pint glass. Dark orange/amber color with a nice thick foam. Slowly melts to a thick film with great lacing all the way down. Smell is very subtle malt, sweet hops and floral. Taste is malty with a nice hop finish, almost juicy. Well balanced with citrus and spruce. Nothing overwhelming. Carbonation is mild and mouthfeel is a little heavier than expected. Overall a great beer.

Bottle 618 of 1041, my wife picked this up for me along with some other choice beers from The General Store at Bells in Kzoo...she rocks! We split this one and poured it in to our standard pint glasses.

A-Pours a copperish color with just under a finger of a cream colored head. Retention is decent and there is plenty of lacing coating our glasses.

S-The nose on this is plentiful, but not what we would call over-powering. Smelling caramel and some faint floral's, along with a breadiness quality...very pleasant.

T-Very sweet up front full of citrus goodness! Hits you with a hint of malt and finishes with good hop retention.

M-A good earthiness with a hint of prickly carbonation, not overwhelming...but it's there. Ultimately a smooth ride.

Overall-Nice beer...We have become fond of this style over the last year and Bells does not disappoint here. We enjoyed this and will look forward to it again next year.

Bottle 745 of 1041; Chalkboard in the Eccentric Cafe lists the draft version at 5.7% abv. I assume this is the same batch.

A - Pours a nice reddish orange with one and a half fingers of dense tan head. Head has great retention and coats the glass i lacing.

S - Aroma is quite floral, with some sweet citrus, herbal notes, some biscuit and toasted malts and a hint of spiciness.

T - Initial sweet citrus yields to a lightly resinous hop bitterness. Nice combination of malts and hops. Finish is dry hop bitterness, slightly herbal. Very well balanced and enjoyable taste.

M - Medium mouthfeel that is very creamy. A bit of dry lingering bitterness. Just enough carbonation, but definitely on the low side.

O - Very enjoyable, well-balanced APA. Would love to see this become an annual release in bottles.

Deep golden orange in color with a fluffy, pillowy head of white holding long retention and leaving a sticky lace behind.

Resiny, earthy hops showing floral attributes, light toasted malt, some sweet bread qualities, orange marmalade, pine, and white pepper.

A very good beer with tremendous creamy smooth mouthfeel that finishes prickly with carbonation. Piney, grassy, floral, pepper, toasted malt, crunchy ripe breads, lemon grass, orange marmalade and more. A great easy drinking pale ale.

A - pours a almost clear reddish orange with a few inches of white fluffy foam that left a good bit of lacing as it faded.
S - Aroma is faint with a very pleasant sticky resin smell, slightly piney slightly citrusy. Very nice aroma.
T - Light malts are followed by a sticky grassy taste. You really get that fresh hop flavor. There are notes of pine and citrus as well. Very enjoyable flavor.
M/D - very light bodied beer with a light amount of carbonation that I think helps to focus on the hops. Very drinkable and would love to have more of this.

Picked this bottle up from the brewery gift shop in December. Marked as bottle no. 596 of 1041, and batch K10818.

A: This beer boasts a copper-tinted amber color, with great clarity. It is a little lacking in the head and lacing departments, but looks appetizing nonetheless.

S: Aroma is delicate, and well-rounded, with several resinous and citrus notes present.

T: Light and dry; toasty maltiness upfront, resinous bitter hops in the middle, and fruity citrus in the finish. Very light, yet full of flavor.

M: Light in body, and clean in texture. The carbonation is spot-on, providing just enough effervescence to round out the otherwise light body.

O: A very well made APA, and one that I am quite fortunate to have found. I doubt many other bottles will be available, but it should still be available at the pub on-tap. Definitely worth trying.
