Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness Chalice. Bottled 09/13/12.
Appearance: Pours a deep amber with some orange and ruby red. Moderate bubbles and a solid three fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.
Smell: A very hop forward red aroma. Big hints of citrus hops including grapefruit, pineapple, orange peel, mango, and lemon. Some earthy pine resin. Fairly floral and spicy. Smells somewhat hot and boozy. Solid red elements with good hints of toasted malts, caramel, biscuit, toffee, and cracker. This smells very sharp and big.
Taste: Just as big and full as it smells. Sharp bitterness from the hops upfront with a taste of grapefruit, orange, pineapple, lemon, and a little mango. Floral and earthy hops along with a spicy kick of pine resin. Not to be lost in the mix is a solid taste of toasted malts with notes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and cracker. Their is also a little burnt sugar like sweetness. Alcohol heat is definitely noticeable in the taste but it isn't overwhelming. Very good taste.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, juicy, and somewhat sticky. Somewhat hot but its manageable.
Overall: A really good brew here. Big and in your face with the hops and sweet malt but manages some balance and cleanness. A very good slow sipper.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.
Appearance - Amber body with a small off-white head. Surface wisps and some residual sugars show up on a swirl.
Smell - Hoppy. Piney and grassy. Caramel malt. Intense all around.
Taste - Follows the nose. Light hop and a hefty dose of caramel. Kinda reminds me of Bigfoot. Smooth caramel malt with a hop bite in the back.
Mouthfeel - Really big malt presence, but well hopped. Although I don't really see the need for it to be this big, besides the gimmick.
Overall - Tastes like one would expect a giant red ale to taste.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/13/2012. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange peel, caramel, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, floral, grass, light pine, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity of citrus/tropical hops and balanced dark/bready malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange peel, caramel, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, floral, grass, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange peel, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity of juicy hops and dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/hop flavor balance with zero cloying after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately creamy and fairly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial red ale with age. All around great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
