I can't express how difficult this beer was to get. Not like jumping through hoops, but waiting 6.5 hours, with my 19month old daughter, in the crazy heat, was ridiculous. Out of all the trips, beer releases, from things like Hill Farmstead, Kate the Great, beer festivals, etc, this was probably the longest and most painful one out of all of them! Growler was filled a couple hours ago, and shared with rudzud.
Decent creamy head, 1/2 finger, quite clear golden pilsner color not orange at all.
Nose very pungent, little resin, nice pine not sap floral needle pine, with nice dank resin. Nice citrus too, tropical fruit, tons of grapefruit and papaya, little passion fruit dankness, mild grapefruit pith, little orange peel, even some mango. Nice effervescent tropical fruit, hint of sweet malt, basic malt, booze hidden very well.
Taste is similar, starting with that needle pine and resin, little pine sap this time too, dank resin, etc. Tons of resin and dank pine like. Into mild tropical fruits, little grapefruit, dank passion fruit, little melon and fruity bubblegum, mild grapefruit pith and candied orange peel. Little gritty hops, mild hop oils, hint if papaya and generic tropical fruit. Hint of generic malt and faint warning booze, quite bitter. Finish is drier a little sticky, very bitter and resinous, more pine sap lingering, little tropical fruit, citrus. it's like the pine sap and citrus/tropical fruit hops are battling it out, but the pine sap is winning unfortunately.
Mouth is med to a bit fuller bod, nice gritty feel, faint faint warming booze, nice carb.
Overall great aroma, but the taste dropped off a bit, the pine, resin, sap and bitterness just destroys that awesome tropical fruit and citrus. The nose brought all those out and taste just dropped. With all the pain and waiting I did, I was really hoping this beer would cure all my ailments, 6 types of cancer, and free a few captives in Afghanistan, all while bringing world peace, feeding the starving kids in Africa, and a few other things, etc. Instead, it was a good IPA, but not as good as Julius or even Green. That battle between the pine sap and tropical fruits was a tough battle that was an unfortunate finish. Not really worth the craziness, but still a good IPA.
