750 mL growler poured into a taster. Growler dated 9/28/2013.

Appearance - Thick looking black body. Nice mocha head.

Smell - Dark fruits, kinda licoricy. Roasty.

Taste - Licorice is strong again. Roast comes back. Less chocolate. A little bitter.

Mouthfeel - Not the thickest stout. Medium carbonation.

Overall - A good stout, but a little different from a standard stout.

750ml THB swing-top bottle filled at the brewery.

First THB glass pours with a 1/2" purply brown head, over the opaque dark brown/black brew. Head fizzes away slowly, with lasting lace. Aroma is dark roastiness and alcohol.

Taste is dark sweetness to start, licorice snap in the middle with some dark fruit, green hops bitterness to the close, which warms with a moderate alcohol burn. Mouthfeel is slickery smooth, and drinkability is good. Almost too easy to drink this one.

Growler picked up on Thursday. I've had a couple chances to try this but skipped so I could have the full effect with a nice growler pour.

Pours a chocolate colored super rich thick creamy 2.5 finger huge head that fades semi slowly, it almost looked like chocolate pudding with bubbles in the middle, it leaves a thick layer of lacing too, pitch black beer, thick too.

Nose, woo roast, there's loads of roasted malt in this sucker. A little bit of charred malt aroma, with some burnt coffee beans, little dark highly roasted coffee, fluffy dark nougat and some dark caramel, faint cocoa powder like the powder of hot cocoa itself, it even seems like a light barrel char despite no barrel, a bit of a toberlone like chocolate, faint almonds, faint clean alcohol, I even seem to get a touch of a smokey malt, like smoldering log.

Taste starts big as expected, roast is the key word but not overbearing surprisingly, roasted malts, black malts, plenty of char, charred malts, charred barrel again for some reason, I think the light smoked malt smoldering log adds that barrel char like character. The smoked flavor, as I just said, is there but light. Faint over roasted coffee, and the smoke adds a hint of smoked meat. Faint cocoa, powdered cocoa, as well as the fluffy nougat and slight dark caramel, and a candy bar like flavor. Hops finally start to break through towards teh finish as the bitter roasty malts, a nice dark chocolate comes out as well on the finish, with nice bitterness, semi dry but a little sticky, hint of warming booze but it's hidden pretty well mostly, and light smoked log and charred roasted malt flavors lingering for a while.

Mouth is fuller bodied but not as thick as I expected, creamy, with decent carb, and very light warming booze.

Overall pretty nice Imperial Stout, high on the charred roasted side which isn't always my fav but it would do really well sitting in the cellar for a couple years, so I wish they bottled it... booze is hidden well, the smoke adds a nice touch too, and hops are not really there until they cut in on the finish after the other flavors subside a bit. A nice beer for a pint, but getting through the 750ml will be a bit tough at the end due to the heavy roast and char flavors. This really would do well with a few years on it (not in the growler though).
