12oz can from ToddBeans (thanks man!). If I deciphered the code correctly this was canned 01/19/14. Served in a goblet.

Pours a murky deep orange, almost brown with three fingers of pale head that fades slowly, leaving copious lace.

Aroma seems slightly off. Musky citrus, earthy pine and hints of an almost clove-like spice.

Tastes earthy and bitter. Orange rinds, lemon zest, dirty pine sap, pepper, grapefruit, mild cracker and intermittent touches of alcohol. More bitter than flavorful and while not distracting, it occurs to me that the booze is more prevalent than it should be given the abv.

Resinous, medium body with average cabonation. Strongly bitter finish of citrus peel and vague pine.

Nothing offensive here in West Sixth's IPA but it certainly isn't tuned to my preferences. At several points when I started getting a little more citrus or malt the bitter (seemingly for bitterness sake) took over before I could detect any meaningful balancing sweetness. Not bad but not one I'll likely ever purchase.

West Sixth IPA on tap at the brewpub in Lexington.

Medium amber; very slight haze; durable off-white head; very good lacing.

Nicely crafted IPA, with enough malt load to keep the ample quadruple hop load from producing too much bitterness. Liked this more as I drank more -- a quality many IPAs lack.

Smooth, medium body with well-chosen carbonation.

poured 12oz can into snifter.

A - Dirty rusty brown with a white 1.5 finger head. Excellent retention and lacing.

S - A ton of piney earthy hops backed by nice caramel malt.

T - It starts off with caramel and crystallized honey, but really builds into a massive bitter pine and earthy hop finish.

M - Slick and oily with a medium will carbonated feel.

O - Solid IPA in a can and reminds me of how many WI IPAs are brewed.

Appearance- deep, dark golden with a wonderful head out of the can , perfectly carbonated for a pint glass.

Nose- this brew gets it right from the start. Take a whiff- Bam!! Floral notes. Citrus. Pine (my favorite). I mean it smells like you just finished with the chainsaw! Outstanding, robust, in-your-face hops. Love it.

Taste- absolutely everything is there. The archetype of what I want in an IPA: solid backbone but not sweet or overpowering malt. I assume there is some medium crystal barley but nothing too dark. Certainly no biscuit or anything that doesn't belong in a great ipa. Hops. Serious hops. I would like to know the schedule on this one but seems a great deal of early hop additions as the bitter note is prominent. Finishes with some light citrus notes and slightly zesty.

Mouthfeel- just about perfect.

Overall- I really don't know what to say other than perfect . Absolutely nailed it , West Sixth. Although I haven't tried everything, I've spent a great deal of time on IPAs since I became sold on craft beer, and this on has it all. It should hold its own against anything out there. If you're a hop head then you will crave it. Fan-freaking-tastic!
