Yellow and hazy but not unfiltered, this wheat gives off a proud appearance with a bright hue and fluffy head.

The aroma is clovey at first but yields a banana, apricot finish. Malt or bread can be found but a soft fruitiness is most evident.

The taste is smooth and easy clove but the banana fruitiness prevails. Malt breadiness stays throughout but the banana-fruitiness wins out. That banana/apricot taste tends to be my favorite in this style and its nice to see this offering from West Sixth go in that direction.

Straight out of the gate and hitting on all cylanders, Lexington's West Sixth Brewery introduces four flagship beers, including this highly zesty and ultimate refreshing wheat ale.

a turbulent pour releases a wrangle of carbonation that fuels a stark white mousse of a head that shows persistent retainage and attractive lace. Light straw in color, the beer's hazy appearance proudly shows of its wheaty roots.

With sharp citrusy overtones, the aromas are alive with lemons, apples, limes, and a background hint of banana and apricot. Moderately bready, the beer's malt and wheat blend carries a whiff of lactic sharpness and mild raw grain. Mild pepper notes of white pepper, and light clove continue to decorate the aromas offering interest but without upsetting the aromatic fruitiness.

Bready with the taste of fresh baking breads, fresh dough, and obvious yeast, the compact foundation for the beer is set. Although a short lived sweetness proves fleeting, the taste of starchy malt rides softly throughout. This provides the underpinning needed for the waves of esters and spices to come. A mid palate of citrus and tropical fruit inform the sweetness in a delicate and spirited delivery. But then the acidic flavors are nearly lactic with a clean and crisp bite allows for a seamless bridge from fruit to spice. The closure of softer white pepper, clove, dried orange peel, and herbal hop tones gives a clean and crisp bite to the beer that prevents an extended aftertaste. Only a respite of fruit and bread return only briefly.

Medium bodied, but seemingly lighter because of the fleeting carbonation and malt richness, and also exacerbated by the growing acidity, hop dryness, and minty-cool alcohols, the beer takes the palate on quite a journey in short order. Ultimately clean, crisp, and refreshing throughout.

While the beer more resembles well made American pale wheat ales, the taste of authentic German hefeweizens show with the fruit and spice interplay. But the citrus acidity and lighter than usual use of wheat malt keeps the beer balanced toward American versions.
