Undated can purchased earlier this month near the brewery.
Pours a deep amber color; clear with a large bone-colored head that has very good retention and leaves marvelous lacing.
Limited aroma with a bit more flavor. Very good sweet/bitter balance, shaded towards the bitter side, yet with more roasted malt than hop flavor. Surprisingly durable, hop-tinged, roasted malt aftertaste.
M: Exceptional; medium-light, airy body without wateriness; excellent, soft, medium carbonation.
O: excellent for style. Just trounces the other Lexington amber (Kentucky Ale) that preceded it.

Poured from a can into a Dogfish Head snifter. Pour is a fairly dark amber, slightly hazy, and sports a finger of fine off-white head that dissipates rather quickly and leaves only a thin layer of foam with little lacing (kind of disappointing given the impressive lacing one sees in their IPA). The nose is very mild and kind of malty with just a hint of lemony, hoppy spice. Even though I realize that this is an American Amber and not a Pale Ale, I was expecting more of a hop presence.

The beer has a firm feel and a nice, balanced profile. Considerable caramel-like, malt sweetness greets you first, followed by a mild hoppy bite of lemon and pine. The hops kind of die a bit on the finish, which is mostly sweet and only slightly dry. Very drinkable and would certainly pair well with just about any kind of food. Not the least bit thin or watery.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't bother to review (or even buy) an American Amber Ale. I find them dull and would prefer to spend money on an American Pale Ale or IPA. Nevertheless, since this brewery is right down the road in Lexington I do want to try all of their beers. I found this to be a very pleasant, easy-to-drink beer that makes a fine accompaniment to football on TV and goodies from the grill, but like everything else in this style, nothing overly complex or mind-blowing. The beer has a good solid flavor, great balance, and nails all the characteristics of the style as listed in the BJCP style guidelines. Definitely better with a meal than by itself.
