Ah, maibock. One of those styles that really ushers in the summertime with style.
On tap at the Falling Rock. Arrived a very rich gold color. A ½ shade darker than most Bavarian ones, but not all of ‘em. Just on the darker end of the scale. While they keep the head minimal intentionally, it never dies and the carbonation gives every sip a bit of a tingle.
While I’m sure I could try to wax poetic about 800 rare fruits and spices buried within, that really wouldn’t be right, would it? This is a maibock where simplicity = good. Luckily, this one is one of the most authentic versions I’ve had over in the states, and it’s nice and fresh, too. Straight ahead malty sweetness on the front end, a bit of clover in the middle, and enough noble hops on the back end to keep things from being candy-like. The hops come out a little more in the nose than the taste (a spiciness that almost comes out as cinnamon with the pale malts), but they’re still correctly more of a balancing element.
Bold enough to get your attention, and hops are present enough to keep it.
Not sure what kind of magic they’re using up at BC, but this one reminds me of the German ones as much if not more than any of the others I’ve run into this year.

Pours a bright, clear dark caramel with a 1 finger head that is smooth, dense and somewhat rich. Doesn't look all that powerful, but it's a maibock....

Aroma is difficult to detect at the bar. Malty for sure. Some nutty and earth spices. Grassy and subtle stone fruit. Caramel and quick snap of hoppy spice. But more biscuity

Malts. Bunches. Sometimes, to me, a ton of malt becomes sticky and syrupy, leaving residual mouthfeel all day. Not this one. It's rich in malt, but the quick hop burst relieves it. Sweet bread, dark bread, caramel and faint coffee. Crispness on the end without the bite.

very nice maibock, easy drinking. Good for those warm-but-not-so-hot days.

Notes on the menu
Malty and sweet with a deceptively high alcohol content 6.5% , and a background of noble hop spiciness, this beer won a bronze medal at the 1998 GABF, putting it into an elite category of only 150 beers nationwide. The beer also ends the misconception that bock beer is dark only. The German spelling is Maibock and is pronounced (Mybook) a traditional beer in Bavaria that celebrates the coming of spring and the planting of the harvest.

My notes
A - Rich Gold, lacing
S - Citrusy hop, malty, grains, grassy
T - Lager, full flavored. Grainy. Nice little hop taste.
M - Dry and clean
D - Great. Benefits of a thirst quenching lager with a lot of interest to keep you ordering more.
