BEER INFO

Brewed by:
8th Wonder Brewery
Texas, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Houston is a BIG city. And we think it deserves a BIG beer. Most people are familiar with India Pale Ales and West Coast IPAs, but now it's our turn to brand that cattle. And that cattle's name is Hopston. This hoppy brew is approachable and balanced; enjoyable year round and perfectly suited for the hot Texas summer. You're welcome and, yes, you may have another.

On tap at Nobi Public House in Webster, Texas.

First off, glad to see this new Houston brewery getting their product out.

IPA's aren't my favorite style but I know a good to great one when I have it. This one was very average.

It certainly isn't a Hop bomb... the term many people use for IPA's that overcome your taste buds with hoppiness.

Grapefruit and citrus was there, but not overpowering.

Overall to me it was just average. I'll try it again in a few months and see if anything has changed.

Not bad, but not great yet.

12 oz. can poured into tight nonic
(3/2/16 born-date printed on bottom rim of can)

L: dark orange/amber ... burnt orange; clear; hard pour renders thick cream head of beige foam, about 1-inch tall and looks sticky up top; keeps a thick collar; some lacing; keeps a 50/50 skin ... pretty beer

S: grapefruit, orange peel, very sweet ... sweet enough to detect bread malt ... green onion ... pine tree, pine tar but still very sweet

T: hop juicy ... grapefruit, orange peel, mango sweet ... some definite malt sweetness, almost bready; bitter at times, in the aftertaste consistently but also it can bite midswallow; malt might be slightly toasted -- the dark color of the beer suggests the possibility, but I can't say for sure; pine, pine needles ... as it warms, the pine seems to replace the grapefruit

F: midweight and some, it's almost thick; carbonation lightens it a little, but this beer has a bit of heft for its ABV

O: solid hoppy IPA with good citrus notes and a detectable malt backbone

Uh-oh... For a boy that went to OU, this beer pours way to near a burnt orange color for me. OK, that was years ago....let's give it a fair shake. Decent balance to the taste, bitter but not over the top. Not enough aroma hops to be outstanding. Even if a fair amount of late/dry hops were used, they would be obscured by all that caramel malt Why? WHY do we have to have all this caramel in our IPAs? And as a side note...if I ever use the term "solid malt backbone" in a beer review, I hope someone slaps me! I get a little buttered popcorn whang as it warms but all in all, not a badly crafted beer...just not quite what I'm looking for in an IPA. Looking forward to trying other beers from this local brewery.

Smell: A pleasing light fruity smell, which seemed to be a lime.
Appearance: Orange color, but the lighting was fairly poor at best.
Taste: Not a very bold one, but I got a hint of hops.
