I bought this as a single at Union Jack's on the Manatawny. I drank it in a pilsne glass.

Pours a bright yellow with tiny little floaters occasionally going by. A two finger head of white bubbles forms, falls to tiny islands and a ring, with scant lacing.

Aroma is of light bready pils malt, maybe very slight DMS, (probably intentional), and barely there spicy hops. Smells great; right on style. Not fruity at all. Smell lasts the whole beer.

Tastes just like it smells. Lightly breadymalt, just there hop bitterness, faint spicy hop flavor, some residual sugar, and not fruity at all. Aftertaste is bready and slightly sweet.

Mouthfeel is low to medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. There is some residual sweetness, but the beer is fairly crisp and refreshing. Finish is short.

If I understand the style correctly, this beer is right on. The delicate flavors are beautifully done, with the malt shining brightly. I really like this beer, and this style. I need to try more kolsch.

16.9 oz. bottle poured into craft beer glass

L: pale gold, almost orange; classic German clarity; very few bubbles in the column ... looks almost flat, but it pushed up a mighty big head of white to almost off-white foam, well over 1 1/3-inches tall that stuck hard at the top; keeps a decent collar of foam; almost no lacing on the way down

S: sweet grain ... some malt there, mostly cracker; definitely sweeter here than in the taste -- in fact, if it tasted as good as it smells, we'd have something; sour grain; floral at times

T: grain ... lots of grain, rice, maize; hay; not much malt flavor; doesn't have the sweetness of the nose

F: thin and light; carbonation is there enough to give it some body ... overall not bad

O: easy-drinking and certainly good enough to enjoy, but not overwhelmingly good enough at the price (almost 18 cents per ounce) to justify drinking this much -- for my tastes, there are lots of better German brews available. would be a perfect gateway beer to wean somebody off the macros. for a grainy brew, it's solid.

Poured from a half liter (17 ounce) Euro-brown bottle into a shaker pint glass. The neck label pronounces the contents "ALE". A moderate pour brings forth about an inch of bubbly, foamy, golden-white head that recedes quickly, leaving a thin, receding sheen of foam. The color is a pale, ruddy-tinged golden with a splash of green. Moderate carbonation.

Lightly fruity on the nose and palate, with hints of melon and citrus and a good backbone of noble hop bitterness (subtly floral). The malt is lightly caramelly, but with a dry finish and a cleansing, light bitterness. Slight hints of spice and vanilla creep in as it warms.

This was my introduction to this style, and I have to say I rather like it. I would say this particular beer is very smooth, light bodied, and refreshing, like a good lager beer, but with enough yeasty and hoppy complexity to keep it interesting. A good choice for hot weather when you want some flavor too. Well worth the sampling at 4-something for a pint-plus bottle. Keep it up Hennessey Grocery!
