Notes/Commercial Description:
Our single hop series has been a delicious and interesting experiment into the diverse world of hops. Following an identical recipe but only changing one variable each time (the hop) we've been able to study the exact aromatics and flavours imparted by specific varieties. Not unlike the series launched by Mikkeller, here at Bellwoods our Monagamy brews are all about settling down with one love. Yes, when ordering this beer in the brewpub the jokes are endless (ie. “I'm not so sure about monogamy” or “I tried monogamy once and never really liked it” or the oft hilarious “I guess I'll have it because my girlfriend/boyfriend is sitting beside me”) but stop being a wise-ass. Even the polygamous can't deny the allure of this beer.

SIMCOE: Known for producing dank and citrusy flavours, Simcoe brings an orange-like quality to this hoppy brew.

Thanks to a buddy for picking up some bottles of this. This is by far my favourite brewery in the province, maybe even Canada. This pours a hazy, golden yellow with good lacing. This pale ale reminds me of california, just a fantastic brew. Tastes of slight citrus, grapefruit and peach coming through with the simcoe hops. Every sip is delicious and the mouthfeel is incredible. This brewery amazes me every time. Just wish it was more available.

A wonderful work of brewing and a superior pale. Full bold fresh simcoe orange citrus taste and well malted. A bit of tangy lemon, and pepper. Small amount of head on golden. Exceptional drinkability, supported by understated carbonation. Worth seeking out for fans of the hop.

Bottled on May 16, 2013. Consumed on May 23.
Poured in to tulip.

A - Hazy golden yellow; orange towards the centre. A thin layer of eggshell coloured head.

S - A huge peach aroma dominates. Pine, tangerine and a hint of melon. A very slight honey sweetness in the background.

T - Moderate bitterness for the style with some peach, pine and grapefruit flavours. There is a also a slight musky presence at times. A touch of honey sweetness in the background. The flavour is good but falls short of the nose.

M - Light body. Sticky and oily. Moderate carbonation.

On-tap at Bellwoods during their "IPA Extravaganza"

Beer has a moderately-sized white head. Fades at a moderate pace but leaves great lacing. Cloudy golden-orange colour.

Smell is a bit muted. Herbal, piney scents. Some grapefruit.

Taste is like the nose. Strong herbal and pine flavours, somewhat dank. Some citrus as well, grapefruit predominantly. Bitter.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation level.

Overall, perhaps my least favourite of the series. Not bad, but the herbal flavour is too much for me. It grew on me somewhat as the glass went along but it paled in comparison to the Nelson Sauvin had immediately before.

Pours pale straw with quite a bit of suspended sediment. The creamy bright white head dissipates quickly but musters up plenty of lace patches. Soft fruity, citrusy notes and bread dough make up the nose. Orange, apricot, lemon, even banana notes show in the first sip. Animal Cracker maltiness provides a clean, unobtrusive balance. Some pineyness shows with warmth. The finish is lightly bitter and quite shortlived.

A very nice showcase of Simcoe hops, though more subtle than I expected. More hop intensity would be a plus, but this still very yummy stuff. Worth a try.
