Notes/Commercial Description:
At the time of its inception, this was a very unique beer for Bellwoods to brew. Though we were earning a reputation for making a lot of high ABV, full-flavoured brews, we still couldn’t deny the appeal of something easy drinking and sessionable. Not really wanting to go the route of the lager, and inspired by the hop-forward low alcohol pale ales emerging from the states, we devised the Wizard Wolf. Weighing in at 4.8% this deceivingly flavourful session ale is easy to drink, and doesn’t knock you off your feet after just one.

Bottle from brewery. Enjoyable bitter ale, more so than being a classical APA. Light citrus. Floral hops. Moderate foam head on light orange body. Soft mouthfeel. Very drinkable and refreshing. I see this being available in cans, replacing much big lot beer.

Sample at Bellwoods before choosing bottles at the shop.

A- 4.0- Very good. Unfiltered. White goodness. Nice white head

S- 4.0- Yeasty good! Typical white beer

T- 3.75- Bit thin here. Not a Hoegaarden by any stretch but a nice try

M- 3.75- Pretty good. Nice and creamy but not as good as the aforementioned

O- 3.83- That is what the rating should be for this one. Overall a nice try but not worth the high price

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention with some good lacing. Aroma of earthy hops with light citrus notes is quite interesting. Taste is a solid mix of citrus and earthy hops with some light dry caramel malt. Body is fuller than expected with good carbonation. Hoppier and tastier than I had expected for a low ABV session-style beer. I wish this was accessible to me.

Fresh bottle from the brewery but no freshness info was apparent. Poured in to tulip glass.

A - Hazy medium orange with a half finger of cream coloured head.

S - Massive fresh hop aroma with grapefruit, tangerine and some pine notes. Lighter peach aroma is present as well as a slight caramel malt sweetness.

T - Moderate bitterness up front with grapefruit, tangerine and pine flavours. A slight caramel malt backbone provides some balance. The palate falls short of the wonderful aroma, but this is still tasty, especially given the ABV.

M - Light to moderate carbonation with some hop oils present. Moderate carbonation.

500 ml bottle from brewery.

Dark amber caramel colour. Half inch fine head. Good streams of carbonation. Some lacing but it slides away.

At first lemon citrus hops aroma that quickly fades. Then nice buttery caramel.

The taste is weak. The dark colour makes me expect strong malt taste. The aroma promises more hops. The strongest flavour is burnt toast. Mild caramel and mild herby hops. Low bitter aftertaste.

A watery feel but good carbonation bite.

This is a light pale ale. It is definitely a session ale as the label says but I need an ale with a stronger flavour.

Loads of lemon zest and peel; finishes with hints of grapefruit. Quite refreshing.

Bottle from the brewery, 500ml into a tulip.

Hazy orange, with a dense white cap. Great retention and lacing. Nose of citrus, mostly oranges, light malt notes and some sweetness. A good bit of pine as well. Taste is generally citrusy and bready, some toasty malt and bread crust on the back end. More orange and a touch of orange pekoe. Medium feel, medium carbonation. Tasty, and while not a session beer, I could consume this in comparable quantities.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a hazy, orange-gold coloring with a filmy, clingy, white surface coating of head. Nose of citrus hops, grapefruit and tangerine forward, with a biscuit backbone. Flavors of pepper, cannibus, and oregano spices in the forward hops profile, with a tangerine and grapefruit backbone. Very light and crisp in mouth. Bitter and sweet aftertaste, with a slightly filmy, dry finish. Very easy to drink.

No date on the bottle, but it can't be more than a week old.

Beer is cloudy orange. A very small white head dissipates quickly. No lace.

Smell is nice; hop focused with lots of tropical and citrus fruit. Some grapefruit, pineapple. A bit of a herbal scent and slight bready malt.

Taste is fairly bitter (surprisingly so). Hop focused again, but not as full as the nose. Pineapple, grass, a bit of pine. Some bready malt. Lingering bitter aftertaste.

Light bodied, moderate carbonation. Refreshing. A bit thin, but certainly a good feel for a beer designed for sessioning.

Overall, fairly flavourful for a low abv beer, but my first impression is that I would take the Common Pale Ale over this.

Appearance - Pours a golden amber with a finger of bubbly white head.

Smell - citrus hop, grainy/biscuity malt, grapefruit peel, lemon

Taste - grainy/biscuty malts along with lemon and citrus hop. Light bitterness lingers. Not as hoppy as the aroma suggests.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with light to moderate carbonation.

Overall - A crisp and easy drinking session ale. The aromas suggested a more hop forward session ale, but in the taste it is more of the grainy/biscuity malt that takes charge. This is a not necessarily a bad thing. A sessionable ale worthy for the masses.

Pours a hazy copper with some suspended particles. A foamy off-white head lasts forever, draping the glass in lace. The aroma is lightly malty and citrusy. The taste is grapfruit hops mixed with a light, bready, caramelly malt profile. I guess hops win out, but balance is quite even. The mouthfeel is medium light bodied with a creamy, full carbonation. Light bitterness in the shortlived finish.

This is a simple, but well executed session ale. It shouldn't be measured against the great APAs, a different ballpark all together. I recommend it on tap especially.
