collaboration with new belgium brewing company. a hoppy vienna-style lager with french amaris, citra and nugget hops. i'm usually not a big fan of collaborations. usually there are too many ideas on the table and the beer winds up being to complicated to be enjoyable. let's see how this goes....
a: clear, deep copper in color with a white head that sticks to the dimple mug for a while.
s: notes of citicus and pine hops with a subtle bread-like aroma.
.t: lots of citrus and tropical fruit hop flavor. very little pine bitterness (>20 IBUs). malt bill is nice, adds a bit of sweetness that keeps everything balanced.
m: finishes dry, like any high quality lager should. a tad chewy, thanks to the midnight wheat.
o: personally, i believe lager yeast is better suited to hop flavor than ale yeast is. why? lagers are usually cleaner in flavor (thanks to the lagering process) which allows the hops to really shine above the malt. i find that most ale yeasts add extra flavors which kind of muddle the hop character. i'm a huge IPL fan (i miss jack's abby!!) and would love to see more craft breweries embrace the lager. this is another winner from dragoon! keep up the good work guys!

Collaboration with New Belgium Brewing, meant to be a more aggressively hopped Vienna Style lager. Rich brown color, clear, with elegant white foam. The aroma is where the beer shines, lots of citrus hoppiness, yet with a subtle, clean, caramel malt character. With Citra and French Aramis hops on the nose I could smell the glass all day.
Definitely a balanced and drinkable flavor, the hops give some citrus touch to the light bread and caramel malts, and the the bitterness is not over the top. At 5.5% ABV this is a seriously easy to drink treat, almost session worthy. Smooth, medium body, clean with a decent carbonation.
Overall I'm pretty impressed with the offering. Initially I wasn't sure about the prospect of a hopped up Vienna lager, but as usual Dragoon did not disappoint. It seems unique, and with intense aroma hops yet a milder overall beer, it's worth having a couple glasses. Recommended...
