Coffee Grounds - Eau Claire, WI

First Kiss is an IIPA brewed with honey. The beginning of the pour is russet orange but darkens with some yeast from the bottle conditioning. The head doesn't really produce and even with a hard, chugging pour I only get a ring and island of pure white foam.

Heavy handed tropical fruitiness leads the way. I'm impressed by the hop profile of this beer. Ripe mango, papaya, nearly overripe pineapple and grapefruit are all swimming in the pool. There's a moderate caramel malt backbone and dusty honey. I like where this IIPA lies.

While the flavor doesn't quite match the aroma it's certainly enjoyable. All the tropical fruitiness is present but slightly muddled and highly bitter. The caramel is there trying to fight it's way through but can't seem to balance the high IBUs. Pine needles bring up the rear. Nice!

Medium bodied mouthfeel with soft carbonation. The bitterness is accentuated by a dry finish and seems to grow as I drink. The alcohol is low, at 8.2%, for a IIPA which helps the body stay short of that sticky sweetness found in a lot of beer of this style.

Bitter and tropical an IPA to my liking. I honestly wasn't expecting much from this beer but now I'm wishing I'd have picked up a 4-pack. I see that they have started distributing to IL so some more will be in my near future.

12 oz bottle poured into a 3 Sheeps pint.

A - A pillowy off white head floats atop the vibrant and clear caramel-cube amber beer, sinking slowly while leaving sheets of lace on the pint.

S - Ripe mango ad pineapple lay it on hot and heavy, finishing with a quick peck of grapefruit rind and lemongrass. This hop-forward, flirtatious double IPA delivers some caramel malt sweetness to balance nicely.

T - First kiss takes a turn, shying away from quite as much hop fruitiness that's displayed in aroma and goes for more American hop earthiness; pine, freshly cut grass, lemongrass but retains some grapefruit and pineapple undertones before the balancing malt takes over with white bread crust and caramelized sweetness.

M - Maybe your first kiss is a bitter memory, in which case is beer would fit perfectly with that as it's intensely bitter. First Kiss is hop-forward throughout but the hops' attributes don't shine quite as we'll as they do in the mouthfeel where they blast past everything with intensity. It's smooth medium body trails off with a long, earthy finish on the tongue for a kiss you won't forget.

O - First Kiss is an appropriate name for the 3 Sheeps' guy's double IPA as Grant decided with his double IPA recipe to start a brewery, and it's obvious why; this beer rocks. It's hop forward, loading on the flavor and bitterness but not overwhelming the palate or drowning the enjoyer with alcohol. It simply takes a good IPA to the next level.

poured 12oz bottle into Teku.

A - Light copper with 2 finger white head and spotty lacing.

S - Big caramel malt aroma with some light hops of tropical fruit, grapefruit and pine.

T - The bitterness is intense, but this has a very big caramel and sweet malt backbone. Bitter grapefruit and pine dominate the hop profile. Finish is quite bitter.

M - Medium body, dry, and good carbonation.

O - This reminds me of SN Bigfoot barleywine. It was good, but much different profile than a IIPA and more similar to a BW to me.

Pours slightly hazed amber with a thin head that leaves lacing.

The smell is of pine, citrus, caramelized biscuit.

The taste is of pine/resin with a touch of aspirin-like bitterness. Honey and caramel take some of the edge off the bitterness to make it more rounded. Sharp alcohol bite in the finish.

It is raw/astringent/boozy, though there is an initial creaminess to it. I believe more of a malt support would give it the body it really needs and smooth it out, but wouldn't want it to lose the hop character. I'm not a brewer, it's just an idea. It could be fuller and smoother.

A big DIPA. Interesting. Certainly hoppy with a strong pine character. Alcohol is noticeable. I was wavering between 3.5 and 3.75 for the overall - decided to go with the latter because for those looking for a more raw, piney, boozy DIPA it's one to choose.

Hazy honey in color, with a fluffy white head that holds for a bit. Plenty of lacing stays behind.

Smell is serious hops, tons of them. Floral and bitter hops, PINE DOMINANT, plus malty goodness, dark fruits, citrus, wonderful.

In the mouth the bitterness is all hop presence, citrus and pine. Coming in timidly is a faint malty backbone that tries to balance the sharp hops. A bit of sweetness is insistent throughout the sip, with the hop character changing along the way.

Mouthfeel is fully carbonated, and a slick taste bud experience. Lacing sticks around to keep it looking and feeling great.

Sadly, I'm not getting the honey, at all.
