This tasty dark German lager is brewed with Pilsner, Munich, Special B and black malt hopped with 100% German Noble hops. Squatters Schwarzbeir has smooth roast undertones and is lightly hopped, leaving us with a malty delicious lager.

On tap at the downtown brewpub in Salt Lake City, Utah. Pours a beautiful dark reddish brown hue with a huge light brown head. The aroma is full of roasted malts and some light fruit. The flavor was excellent; tons of malt here, roasted and full. A nice fruity flavor, sweet but not too sweet. Some light hops and a very nice full and creamy mouthfeel round it out. Just an excellent beer. I wish this was bottled so I could ship some out. Squatters kicks ass.

Squatters Black Forest Schwarzbier has a thick, foamy, creamy, beige head, a dark brown appearance, and very heavy lacing left behind on the glass. The aroma is of dark malt, brown bread crust, and standardized "beer smell". Taste is of creamy, dark malt, brown bread crust, sweetness, and subdued bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and a bit slick, and Squatters Black Forest Schwarzbier finishes crisp, refreshing, and highly drinkable. I can see why this beer has won seven major medals.

This one was a free sample at the brewery. It was a lovely dark brown color, but by the time I got it there was no head to speak of.

The aroma was of rich malt, and was quite sweet. Much more so than I would have expected for a schwarzbier, but it was pleasant.

The taste was of very strong, roasted chocolate malt. Very nice. I enjoyed this one.

Cery dark in color. A tan head on this one.

Smells like roasty malts and nuts! Along with some spice.

This drinks like a mild stout. Very creamy and delicious. Chocolate, toast, char, and nuttiness.

Creamy and full mouth surprisingly. Not like a heavy stout or barleywine, though.

Overall a wonderful beer! Like a robust porter without all the extra alcohol.

It looks : Lively almond colored head about 3 fingers tall, the body is a deep dark brown with highlights of red when held up to light.

It smells : dark fruits - plum, pumpkin, prune, mixed with wet earth. Bread crusts. A wheat or rye note comes out with deeper inhalation. As the head recedes I'm getting more blood orange, and roasted chocolate.

It tastes : A strong earthy hop comes out first, but amazingly avoids being bitter or off-putting. Behind the hopped front are toasted malts, raisin, semisweet chocolate, and a bite of tree bark. It finishes clean and dry.

It feels : smooth, velvety, light to medium bodied, ending clean and dry, like your laundry.

Overall : though slightly more hopped than most schwarzbiers I've tried, it finishes strong and malty so it's for sure within spec. Yeah, it's a good beer, I'd have it again. Maybe even my favorite Schwarz now. Definitely top 3 along with 1554 and Bohemian Black.

Pours a dark brown color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger off-white head, some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with some toffee notes. The taste is sweet, malty, with some toffee. Medium body, kinda crisp/smooth. Drinkable, not a bad brew.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Color was really gorgeous dark brown/black with a thick, tan, head. It smelled of malt, malt, and more malt. Pretty much the same on taste, lots of malt with maybe a hint of sweetness (toffee?). It finishes with a nice roasty flavor. The Color makes you think that it might be fairly heavy in the mouth, but it does have that medium-light Black Lager feel. All in all it's a very nice beer that compares very favorably to other black lagers that I've had.

Draft pint at the brewpub. It’s schwarz alright! This is a beauty with a full, sticky head. Sweet malty aroma. Nice tight black malt flavors ... solid, solid malt with a nice little Teutonic hop bite to finish it off. Among the better Schwarz’s I’ve head in a while, think this would go toe-to-toe with Kostritzer. (#2791, 4/12/2007)
