12 oz bottle with a born on date of June 29, 2011 poured into my goblet.
Appearance: An almost opaque beers that is probably dark brown rather than black. The head was fizzy and lasted only a few seconds and settled into one lonely island near the center of the cup.
Smell: Roasted malt with mild chocolate notes in the background. Maybe a hint of coffee. Overall nice but a little restrained.
Taste: A thin mild bitterness from the roasted malts with maybe a hint of earthy hops. There is a little dark chocolate character hiding in there as well. The finish is dry but not prolonged.
Mouthfeel: The real letdown of this beer, but I understand why they do it this way. The beer is too fizzy and the body too thin. They needed to do this to hit 4 ABV, if they did not, this beer could not be sold in grocery stores in Utah.
Overall: This one might be a stout that is non-intimidating for BMC drinkers.. Unfortunately, there are other stouts that I like much better. For a session beer, you really don't get much better except for the APA (Full suspension) that the UBC brews.

Black colored beer with a medium sized brown head that doesn't last.
Smells of chocolate and patent malt. There is a strange menthol scent to this. Hint of smoke.
Starts out semi-sweet with a big chocolate taste. Lesser taste of coffee and toasted grain. The taste is more like that of a milk stout. This does have little chocolate milk flavor to it.
Mouthfeel is good.
Overall this damn easy to drink. Manages to get a decent taste and mouthfeel out of a 4% beer.

on draft at squatter's pub at slc airport
appearance - a bit light, like a brown ale, with deep ruby edges. very little head that dissipated very quickly.
smell - toasted bread, light cocoa, dried nuts. very little roast.
taste - this is where the beer jumps out. perhaps others have had older bottles, but i was quite happy with the flavor. more toast, stronger chocolate, macadamia nuts and some light, sweet caramel malt. while light, this beer is ultimately pretty enjoyable. the bartender tells me that utah law caps the ABV, and i think they do a great job given the gravity restriction. suggesting that they add more malt here ignores the limits within which they work.
mouthfeel - here they could have done a bit more. the beer is pretty thin, which is quite disappointing for an oatmeal stout. i don't get any of the hop or roast bitterness some others describe - just some smooth lingering flavor without any notable body.
overall - despite the criticisms, this is on the whole an enjoyable and flavorful beer that showcases that even within such strict confines, very good beer can emerge. i'd be curious to see what the brewer produced without an ABV cap.

Brown cola colored beer, beige head on it, well over 1". Aroma was a lot of burnt malt, or should I say, heavily roasted. Didn't get anything to make me think this had oats in it at the time. Lots of roast, leaving no traces of chocolate, coffee or hops to the senses.
Taste, ok, we're getting a little smoother, but nonetheless, especially for a 4% abv the bitterness is too high. The malt is too thin for how heavily roasted it is. Sure its 4% but you still need some body. Needs some chocolate or more chocolate malt. Its a decent beer, but it is far from a repeat purchase. There is a weird acidic bitterness from it, like some jerk decided to put a lemon in my beer. Except no one did.
This beer has too much burnt malt relative to all the other aspects of the beer. Tone that done, or soak it up with a bunch more 2 row that isn't so heavily roasted, that's where I would start improving this beer.
