"There is no insanity so devastating in man's life as utter sanity."

--William Allen White

Antique bronzed orange peel with brighter tangerine trim. The entire 12 ounces entered the glass easily and with room to spare. Barely two fingers of beige foam was created, which is now down to one finger and shrinking. A short collar of lace is all that sticks.

It's obvious from the color and the aroma that this is an amber doppelbock rather than a dark doppelbock. There's a generous amount of toasted-earthy-nuttiness, which means that Munich malt is large and in charge. A better than average smell score is probably being kind.

Devastator Double Bock Ale (shouldn't that last word be Lager?) is decent beer if you like this take on the doppelbock style. There's plenty of flavor and no major missteps, which are positives of a sort. Full disclosure: this basic blueprint has never floated my boat.

Each mouthful delivers brown bread covered with walnut butter and fruit jam. Sweetness stays well ahead of bitterness, as it should, but the beer does not go overboard in that respect and is acceptably balanced for the style. That last burp tasted exactly like dry-roasted peanuts.

Even though the mouthfeel might be the highlight, it doesn't do enough to earn the next highest score. Size is fine and the carbonation is fine as well. Neither more nor fewer bubbles would have worked as well.

Wasatch's Devastator Double Bock is a solid interpretation of the style that might have earned higher scores across the board if I was more of a doppelbock dude. Please take that into account and buy accordingly.

From notes; best by 5/23/11, consumed 4/20/11

A - Pours amber with one finger of tan head. Head has pretty good retention.

S - Smells like bread and dried fruits, mostly raisin and plums.

T - Similar to the smell. Also getting some flavors of tea and light caramel malt. Finish has a bit of bitterness to it.

M - Medium mouthfeel, actually a bit thin. Slightly sticky but pretty clean. Finishes somewhat dry.

O - Pretty good doppelback, but doesn't really stand out. Alcohol is not apparent. Just a bit too thin.

12oz brown with a freshness date.

LOOK: Dark brassy amber, sufficient head

SMELL: Broth, treacle, chicory, dark bread, clean, spicy alcohol, yeast, nutty, mineral

TASTE: Creamy, full bodied, malt sweetness, cocoa powder, bread crust, herbal hop, nutty grain, grassy, clean semi-dry finish

Tasty even if it does not show off that much depth. Very clean and almost too easy to drink for an 8.0% brew. Well done.

Appearance: caramel brown in color, 1/3 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: rich and deep caramel

Taste: deep caramel, brown sugar, slight chocolate

Mouthfeel: rich and heavy bodied, low carbonation, sweet

Overall:A solid doppelbock that is dangerously drinkable. This one is good and sweet but not overly complex. I will pick this up again at some point.

The beer pours a brown color with a large, off-white head. The aroma is very malt as is expected. I get some toffee and bread notes, as well as some vinous notes. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of toffee and a little bread, as well as some grape-like fruit notes that mix very well with the malt. The alcohol is detectable but not overwhelming. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A nice doppelbock.

Poured into pint glass with very light head and a moderate amber color. Light malt smell. Taste a bit sweet, light malt flavor. Before you know it you are ready for another drink because the taste is gone. Definitely a week doppel but very drinkable. No hint that it is an 8% so a positive there. Would chose another one to drink while out in a bar but I would not have to have another.

Dark brown in color with great clarity. A fingernail of khaki colored head obverse three quarters of the top. The aroma is comprised of dark malt, chocolate, and sourdough bread. The flavor is chocolate, dark malt, with a bit of a sourdough component. The mouth is moderately carbonated and smooth.

Pretty decent sized off white to light tan head leaves a milky decent sized lacing over a clear reddish caramel colored beer.

Slightly spiced sweet caramel malt aroma.

A light alcohol hint on a rich sweet caramel malt with a lightly toasted taste, with a slight hop backbone.

This medium bodied beer finishes with a light caramel light dry aftertaste.

A pretty decent beer, but slightly more of a caramel taste than I was hoping for.

Dark copper brown with a tight beige crown.
The nose is primarily caramel, with lesser notions of toasty bread and candied fruit and sporadic rum-like alcohol flares.
Caramel rolls across the mouth. It's not necessarily oversweet, but simply monopolizes the flavor profile. Looking hard, one can find some backing toasty graininess, and bits of fig, and cocoa. But caramel reigns supreme throughout. Booze ticks up a bit around the close, but it's mellow and easily overlooked given the strength of the beer.
Glassy, if perhaps a little thinner than expected given the specs, with a moderate+ carbonation. It drinks easier than it probably should, as the alcohol is generally hidden and the caramelly maltiness, while strong, never gets to a cloying point.
It's a bit one-dimensional, but not a terrible offering.
