I was very happy to find this on tap at Von Trier, here on the East Side of Milwaukee. Passed to me a light, amber wheat color with an inch egg shell head that fell just a bit but stuck around with great lacing. A fairly clear brew with significant visible carbonation. The nose presents orange peel, grapefruit, and more subtle grasses, like candy to a hop head's nose. There's also clear bread malt notes making their statement. The taste has citrus peel at the fore, followed quickly by a somewhat sour and sweet bread malt flavor. A bit of herbal hop notes and alcohol pushing through toward the back, with moderate hop bitterness closing things out. In addition to these, there's a touch of raisin in there, along with some brief funkiness. The mouth is on the lighter side of medium-bodied, and it's both brightly acidic and somewhat syrupy. Quite effervescent. It's not quite as smooth as I would have liked, but really not bad.
This is an extremely welcoming beer--great appearance and nose--that I feel wasn't quite as strong in the taste and mouthfeel. But it's not for lack of flavor: This DIPA is really very stocked with hop and malt flavors. I think my beef is more to do with a lack of smoothness and a bit too much syrup sensation in the mouth. There's certainly complexity, but I would have hoped all the flavors would have come together more seamlessly. I would definitely like to come back to this one later and see how my feelings have changed.

Thanks to a tuba player named Dan for this one!
A double IPA not from CA? My bias already sets in. Beer poured gently into a pint glass. Head is bone white, dissipating into a halo circling the inside of the glass. The color is an orangish amber, very clean. Smell is somewhat lackluster. It does remind me of hopslam minus the honey sweet. No immediate dry hop dank smell like the IPA's I'm usually craving. It's def not bad, just not impressive. There's a mixture of malt, alcohol and a light bitterness as I gulp it down. Def more malt fwd vs a west coast DIPA. It's pretty much what I expect, which isn't bad...I'm just an entitled beer need whose been spoiled by the wild Wild West. Cheers!
