A: Pours a dark orange/amber hue, no sediment

S: getting a sweet citrus upfront along with a little pine as well

T: good mouthful, carbonation is right in the middle range. Getting a lot of the citrus flavor from the hops but there also a strong malty chewyness that is very present.

Overall I think this is a very well done beer, I try to stock up on it every time i visit Utah.

Not a bad beer and is palatable but not to my personal liking. It has a very thick syrupy feel in the mouth. Smell(in a can) was too sweet for me. Taste was not hoppy enough for a double ipa. And lacks bitterness which I like. I would not write it off as a bad beer but I feel it does not live up to traditional double ipa standards. I'll have to try it in a glass to see how it taste on draft.

Appearance: Pours with a bold orange color. Finger worth of head on the pours which settled in but was present while drinking. Mild active carbonation, a touch low for the style.

Smell: A big saturated citrus front greets the drinker. Slight herbal notes are complimented with straw and prairie grass. Semi-sweet caramelized body fits in very well with the hop profile.

Taste: Medium bodied fruits greet the drinker. A potent pine and prairie grass body really pops. Tangerines, saturated oranges, and grapefruit pull the hop profile through. Finish is sweet malts with linger heavy fruit and a touch of bitter pine.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is a touch lighter which really allows the sweetness of the malt profile to come through.

Overall: There are plenty too many of these big malt forward IPAs out there. This one sets itself aside but giving a full hop profile with plenty sweet malts. A great local Utah brew, certainly worth a shot if you see it.

I pulled this out of a $1 grab bag (box if you want to split hairs) at a local liquor store. I was expecting to find something cheap, awful, or out-of-date, but lo and behold I got a DIPA I have never tried before. Live review. 12 oz. can with a best before date of July 14th (about three weeks away). Pours into a standard shaker pint a hazy light amber with a thick, frothy, and very retentive beige head and a substantial amount of lacing. This is a very, very beautiful beer.

Aroma is massive pine resin. A little catty and grassy. Just a touch of orange, but little otherwise in the way of citrus. A bit of biscuit and musty yeast. Alcohol noticeable but not overpowering.

The flavor is very clean. Piney and grassy hops, but relatively little perceived bitterness. Bready/biscuity malts are subtle, but detectable. A little bit of orange rind, but this seems to be more likely from the yeasty esters than the hops. Surprisingly balanced, and surprisingly mellow (well, as far as DIPAs go). Alcoholic flavors are mostly, but not completely hidden.

Slightly oily/resiny mouthfeel, with moderate carbonation and a medium body. A bit of alcoholic warmth, but very subdued for a 9%er.

Overall, this was a very pleasant surprise, especially for the whopping buck I paid for it. This thing is a 9% DIPA? Hard to believe. Very well-balanced, clean, and dangerously drinkable. I likely will avoid this in the future, not because it's bad, but only because I could see trying to session this, which would inevitably result in disaster. It's no Pliny, Exponential Hoppiness, Hopslam!, etc., but it's still an excellent DIPA. Whether you're a hophead or not, give this one a shot.
