12 oz bottle from the state system poured into my goblet. The bottle has a born date (!) but I cannot quite read it, either 2 or 3-24-11, either way pretty new.

Re-review: Poured into my perfect pint from a bottle with a date of 9-18-12 (about three weeks old).

Appearance: Strikingly clear copper color with a short lived almost white head on top that leaves a bit of lacing.

R-Appearance: A touch of haze this time, but wonderful lacing and a three finger head.

Smell: Boozy caramel maltiness with citric and pine type hop smells.

R-smell: Nice caramel malt backbone with loads of hops to balance. I get pine, oranges, mango, and other tropical goodies. This is no Sculpin, but not bad.

Taste: Taste follows the smell. Long lasing bitterness on the finish round out a well established malt backbone, which is as big as the hops . The hops have a nice pine and citric character.

Pretty much the same as above.

Mouthfeel: The body and carbonation are spot on. The flavors coat the mouth nicely and are long lasting.

Overall: This is a nice addition to the Squatters line of beers. I think I like Elephino/Elephant (Red Rock brewery) a little better. That being said, this is a beer I will still pick up every now and then. A solid beer!

I still enjoy this beer. I will up the overall rating (from 3.5 to 4) because this is one of Utah's few IIPA beers, and it is on the less expensive side.

Reviewed from notes.

Has the normal semi-hazy orangish amber IPA appearance with a single finger of white foam that lasts for about two minutes but only leaves behind small amounts of lacing. Medium body and carbonation levels.

Smells mostly of dank and resinous hopping with smaller quantities of florals and herbal hopping on the side with a very muted malt aroma that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Once it was in my mouth, it came across as a cracker malt sort of profile, with the resinous and floral hopping taking center stage while the herbal aspects pop out at the finish along with a surprise garnish of subtle mintiness. The ABV is well hidden, but those malts are just too muddled to provide a strong enough framework for the hops to stand upon.

Beer #3 in the great Utah Brew Hunt.

This was a decent dipa. I felt like it was much more malt forward than I'd like for the style. It's a nice drinker, and the abv definitely doesn't show at all, but with so many others of the style showing strong and distinct hop tones, I feel like this one should be too.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours hazy golden with a large white head that sticks around quite a while. There are a few tiny bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. There is plenty of sticky lacing left on the side of the glass as the head retreat. There are some sweet and bready malts in the nose. I also detect some nice floral and piney hops. The bready and sweet malts blend well with the hop flavors. This isn't a very hoppy DIPA and I don't think this is much hoppier than their regular IPA. Still, a DIPA doesn't have to be very hoppy to be solid, but be well balanced. This certainly fits that bill. The hops do show up in the aftertaste, but the aftertase is not strong. The body is medium with moderate carbonation. The finish is dry. The drinkability is high for this sipping style. This is an excellent beer.

Squatters Hop Rising Double IPA has a thin, cream-colored head and a hazy, orange appearance, with some streaming bubbles and a lot of lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, bready malt and other sweetness. Taste is very hoppy, bready, and sweet. But, it’s not really any different than their regular IPA. Mouthfeel is medium, and the finish is mostly dry and easy drinking. I recommend it.
