Style | ABV
English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after one of the famous ’front four’ trails on Mt. Mansfield, this I.P.A. is brewed in the English tradition of pale ales shipped from Britain, around Africa, to India. Those ales contained extra hops and a higher alcohol percentage, which both served as natural preservatives. This ale holds true to those original, defining characteristics. Formerly known as "National IPA" at The Shed Restaurant & Brewery.

Like the other Shed beer that I had recently, I picked this up in Totowa last week having never tried this before. As others have alluded to on here, Vermont brews some great IPA's but this fell just a bit short. The appearance was great but there wasn't a lot of aroma here and the taste felt just a bit too artificial to be considered great. What this turned out to be was a beer that was just filling and hoppy enough to be satisfying without having any memorable qualities to it.

No doubt that the appearance was the best aspect to it, as the fluffy heat, wonderful lacing, and sediment that moved up and down like a lava lamp all combined for a pleasing aspect to the appearance of this beer. The hue was a dull apricot and quite opaque, with just a bit of light seeping in around the edges. What did I get out of the aroma? Hardly anything, to my surprise! Just a medicinal and herbal undertone that didn't stand out much and I struggled to find the hops underneath it once I gave this a sip. There were some earthy and citrus notes but no burning or bitterness was easily discernible and this went down relatively easily for a beer that looked so pleasing when I poured it out. There was lots of carbonation but without anything to cleanse or scrub, it actually detracted from the flavor profile of this beer.

To be fair, it wasn't weak and there was enough alcohol in here to be felt well before I finished this off. A slight mint aftertaste kept things clean and neat but this needed to be a bit more edgy and groundbreaking to stand out. What resulted was an IPA that was easily drinkable and easily forgotten, which is not how I remember my beers from the Green Mountain State, Magic Hat notwithstanding. Only worth a go if you're a hophead that needs a fix and wants a relatively light take on this style.
