Style | ABV
English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after one of the famous ’front four’ trails on Mt. Mansfield, this I.P.A. is brewed in the English tradition of pale ales shipped from Britain, around Africa, to India. Those ales contained extra hops and a higher alcohol percentage, which both served as natural preservatives. This ale holds true to those original, defining characteristics. Formerly known as "National IPA" at The Shed Restaurant & Brewery.

Hazy strong orange colour with a smooth, creamy, white head. Good head retention.

Lemony with some passionfruit notes. More floral than piney or fruity. Soft malt aroma.

Nice tropical fruit combined with a slightly resinous hop character. Light malt. Not bad.

Medium body with moderately-high carbonation.

A decent if unexceptional beer. Mildly flavoured and relatively unexciting.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Cloudy orange color with two fingers of a light tan head, medium lacing.
S - Big rich toffee malt, some floral hops, pine, a big of sweet orange marmalade.
T - Toffee and biscuit malts are the base here, some dry bitter grapefruit and floral hop bite.
M - Just bitter enough, not overly dry.
O - Good English IPA, leads a little more American, but very drinkable. It was best when it was right out of the fridge.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Orangey amber color with about 2 fingers of white head that lingered and heavy lacing on the glass.

Smell: Strong citrus and hops.

Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of bitter hops and pine with sweet citrus.

Overall: Good IPA, I would definitely have this one again.

eyes...
whoa, frothy mofo, easy pour and this still explodes up to 3 fingers of fluff, the bubbles are large and soapy and tend to hang on like homeless in san francisco, besides the mammoth head the carbonation level on sight is pretty damn strong (vermont strong?), the hue is your typical orange with some burnt hues of sunset all with a little cloud nature as a testament to the unfiltered moniker on the label. a damn fine looking beer

nose...
musty and earthy hops with a nice citric tinge (but not over the top citrus bomb type stuff), the musty tone also feeds into the sweet malts, it has a nice natural honey note that really stands out and underneath that little blanket is some nice grain scent, these unfiltered IPAs sometimes remind me of keller type beers of germany and this would fit that bill

taste etc...
drinks a little milder than I like in the hop department, it has sort of a woodsy-ish freshness - not quite the hop bite in many american (or vermont) IPAs, there is good bitterness in the finish that lingers nicely, while carbonation seems vastly evident in the look it is somewhat absent feeling in the mouth, the major flavor I am getting here is "brown honey"... a nice subdued sweetness reminiscent of maple syrup but not quite as sweet (although real VT maple syrup is sort of not sweet.. I get it...). Unfortunately after downing most of this brew I find it a touch watered down tasting... not bad but not great.

verdict?
an interesting brew but the Long Trail unfiltered is superior... if you like some hop (bitterness) burn in the back but more mild semi-funky malt flavor this may be for you... worth checking out just for diversity but not worth giving up your left nut for.
