22oz Bomber
$7.99
4 Seasons - Morris, IL

Kidnapped by Vikings is brilliant orange with a shine that lasts for days. There's a touch of haze throughout the body but a glow when backlit. The micro bubbled head is pure white with a quick fade down to a skimming that's kept alive by active bubbles to the surface. Spotty lacking slides back to the body after each drink.

The nose is sugar cookie sweet, a little powdered sugar even, a very pale mat sweetness. The hop profile is citric in nature but seems to be confused as to it's exact direction. Orange, a little sugary, plays the biggest role along with some peppery under ripe pineapple. The citrus seems faded and confused with no certain pop; pith, peel, jam, nothing. Vague, generic, citrus.

Again, we have that generic citrus. It's orange but with no direction. There's some pineapple, it's faint without much authority and bordering on sweetened bread of sorts. A drizzle of caramel makes itself known that wasn't present in the nose. The best part of the flavor profile is the lingering citrus, it manages to clean up a bit on the finish.

The mouthfeel is my favorite part of the beer. Medium bodied with a slick carbonation and sweetness that dries up quickly. Bitterness seems low at first but grows to a solid moderate over time and lingers. Drinkability is there.

Solemn Oath has fallen flat with Kidnapped by Vikings. It's vaguely this and vaguely that. Half good and half bad. There's not much to get excited about with this beer. It's unfortunate. I'll pass in the future.

22 oz bottle from Binny's Napertucky into a tulip. No bottling date, when will I learn?

Murky and a little sloppy in color, head is short lived, lacing is minimal.

Bit of pineapple, some juice and leafy hops, and a light buttery biscuit.

In a word: boring. Some fruity hops, a bit of pineapple, minimal bitterness, some support malt. It's a very standard, nothing offensive but certainly nothing unique or even that interesting IPA. Not very complex, not overly tasty, easy to drink but not all that encouraged to do so.

Watery mouthfeel in finish make this a weak point.

A hometown brewery is exciting and something I'd like to support, and while this isn't discouraging it also doesn't hit any real key notes for me either. A middle of the road entry and nothing all that special.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass. No freshness date? SOB 2014.

A: really nice golden amber with about 2" of head with some lacing. Didn't last a real long time.

S: hints of citrus, but mostly hops. Not strongly piney.

T: not nearly as complex as I anticipated. Some grapefruit and hops and that's about it.

M: pretty light bodied with moderate carbonation. Refreshing, but not my ideal IPA.

O: Glad to have tried this. I love supporting the small breweries and thanks to a friend that picked this up for me on trade. But, not overly impressed. I'll stick with my PNW IPA's.

On tap at Pints in Elmhurst. They usually have one or two of this brewery's beer going at any given time.

Served in a shaker, the beer is bronze/orange with a fluffy beige head. It has pretty nice lacing.

Nose of grapefruit and caramel malts. There is also a tropical fruit note that is a cross between mango and juicy fruit gum.

The taste follows the nose. Nice citrus and tropical bitterness balanced by slightly sweet malts. Balanced with more spicy notes mid glass.

Mouth is pleasantly oily and a bit coating. I like this one and am glad to see it in regular rotation.

22oz bottle, no apparent freshness date other than "SOB 2014", 6.0% also listed on label
L - hazed amber-orange colored ale topped with a creamy ivory head, good retention and lacing
S - juicy, fruity, citric, orange, grapefruit, lemon, grass, caramel; very fresh aroma
T - grapefruit rind, pine, orange, caramel malt, herbal, and tea-like
F - thin-to-medium body, sharp, bitter, semi-dry finish
O - good American IPA from a local brewery just a couple of miles from my house. It's nice to finally see them bottling some of their beer. At its price point ($6.99), which is unfortunately pretty fair these days, I don't think I'd buy this again seeing as there are many less expensive, better options available. Still glad to try one.
