Not sure why someone would load so much weight and heaviness into an asscrack of summer beer. But here it is, and it has the volume turned up to 11, so whatever balance there is is positively brickwalled. This is my least liked effort from Solemn Oath. There's a smell of tar on the nose that kind of follows into the grain billing with an abiding bitterness that sort of finishes in a cherry-ish smoke. A slight tanginess is apparent as well. But, if there's supposed to be any form of farmhouse / saison zest or life in this beer. What's upfront where it feels charred and burnt and has the smell of road construction is certain to destroy it. One of those beers where the empty glass smells more attractive than the filled one and it smells a bit more like stout and notes of a darker pipe, or even chewing tobacco come up.
With a second pour, I get hints of plum, and sort of a sour cherry in addition to the smell of tar. The beer is still a bit of a mess. There's certainly room for improvement in enabling the yeast to make the grain bill shine, and I hope that future batches address them.
