Notes/Commercial Description:
Rich caramel malt sweetness is beaten over the head with bright, fresh American hop flavors of grapefruit citrus, pine and tropical fruit in our double IPA. This beer is the bigger, more successful brother of Kidnapped by Vikings.

Served in a tumbler at Firkin.

Solidarity is keeping it real with some tastiness from the 'Thrill down south. This stuff pours a lightly hazy sunset amber topped by a finger of cream foam. The nose comprises grapefruit peel, light leek, grass, and some light toffee in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, with the grapefruit peel coming in as more of a zest, the leek is lighter, and some lemon rind, light banana, and light black pepper come through as well. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a nice little DIPA, one that doesn't overdo the hops and maintains a healthy balance. Good times.

A: Hazy, rusty orange in color. Forms a moderate sized white head that falls to an extra thick ring around the corner and a patchy surface coating. Very little lacing.

S: Well, this isn't starting off so great. Orange, orange rind, caramel malt, balsa wood, earth, orange blossom, dirt with a touch of alcoholic spice on the back end. Yeah, it smells like a bag of dirty oranges.

T: Okay, the taste isn't much better. Starts off with a moderate sweetness. A blend of caramel malt and orange. Then a little grapefruit, before turing earthy and mildly skunky. Finish is yeasty esters, which are out of place for the style. However, the most interesting (and not interesting in a good way) thing is about a minute after you swallow there is this sticky blend of orange juice and bitterness in the mouth.

M: Medium bodied. Sticky. Appreciable bitterness. Leaves an unpleasant coating in the mouth. This beer resides at the exact opposite side of the spectrum from "clean."

O: From my experience, Solemn Oath likes to brew their beers "outside of the box" when it comes to styles. And this beer is no different resulting in a DIPA that is reminiscent of a DIPA, but not really. A DIPA that focuses on hoppy bitterness while forsaking hop flavor. Unfortunately, like many of SO's beers, this one is also fairly average.

Picked this up at Solemn Oath today.

Served in a Solemn Oath glass.

A: Poured a very cloudy gold, with a soft, white pepper-esque head.

S: Strong, strong, strong Pine Sol with cherry-infused filtered water. Grapefruit with even more added sugar.

T: Very hoppy, with quite a bit of lemon and orange zest. Others I split this with described it as soap….. I beg to differ.

M: The drinkability is a tad low on this one due to the richness, but it's still quite good. I wish there was a bit more caramel goodness in there.

O: Very respectable brew from a new (to me) brewery.

22oz Bottle
Kenwood Liquors - Homer Glen, IL

Ravaged by Vikings fills the snifter with a body the color of a sunrise. It runs from red tinged orange at the widest to tarnished copper up the neck all of which is fairly hazy. The head is clean white and soapy before falling to a thick ring around the glass. Thin drink lines get left behind after each drink.

Sweet grapefruit and orange seem to be the focus of this IPA. The grapefruit is a touch pithy but more so broiled with sugar. The orange has jammy characteristics and sweet peel. A touch of resin and alcohol mingle in the background. The malt is actually pretty doughy and neutral making for a solid foundation. There is a buttery character to the sweet hoppiness that worried me but the more I smell the more I appreciate.

Again, the flavor profile bases itself on that juicy, dripping, sweet citrus. The citrus I mentioned runs from front to back. Resinous hops join mid palate with a drying, but soft, alcohol heat. The malt profile is faint with doughy and light caramel characteristics allowing the hop profile to shine.

A medium body and slightly prickly carbonation make up the mouthfeel. Bitterness grows to moderate and a drying alcohol finish cleans things up. The alcohol isn't tasted but the fumes hit the nose.

The sweet citrus makes this IIPA. It seems to just drip ripe oranges and grapefruit. Ravaged by Vikings is a good drinking IIPA all around and the price point for a bomber in this area isn't bad. I'd pick this up again in the future if they decide to bottle again.
