Served in a shaker pint glass at Sheffield's.

"Pernicious", eh? Well, how else would you describe a Belgian brown ale brewed with rye? In any case, it pours a mostly clear sunrise russet-amber topped by a finger of glowing off-cream foam. The nose comprises sweet and toasted toffee, light brown sugar, light rye bread, and a touch of Belgian yeast. The taste brings in more of the same, with more rye bread, some sourdough, some mandarin orange syrup, and a bit more brown sugar. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a solid brew, though the Belgian influence is hardly there.

Pours a lovely plum color with a nearly nonexistent head of off-white foam. Interesting aroma smells of dark fruit and clovish yeast along with an unusual element that’s hard to describe--maybe it’s the rye.

The taste consists of fruity sweetness up front accompanied by a twinge of yeast and earthy, peppery hops. There’s a lot going on, but it’s pretty well balanced. The sweetness resembles primarily raisins, dark fruit, and toasted bread. The rye is well integrated, lurking beneath the surface without ever detracting from the other elements (it’s most noticeable in the finish once the beer has warmed amply). Alcohol is well concealed, yielding just a hint of warming. Medium body and carbonation lend a smooth, prickly mouthfeel.

Overall, this is a unique brew that puts an interesting twist on the Belgian-style ale. The balance and complexity are there, and I’m a sucker for the Belgian yeast and mouthfeel. I’m not usually very keen on rye beers, but this one is tastefully done in a way that adds nuance without being gimmicky.
