Dark brown rather than black in the tulip. A brief head. Sprightly carbonation on the tongue. Some piney hops in the nose.

Well made, but this is in the increasingly tiresome "Cascadian" black IPA mold. Hot with spice and tastes more alcoholic than the 7.5% listed. A mouthful of wet wood. Very sharp. Hops are totally dominant. "Acerbic" is the word I was looking for. Very bitter. A wet stew of bitterness. There are plenty of drinkable IPAs, even dank, black, Cascadian IPAs that are better than this. Not a winner from a brewery I am expecting great things from.

Called a "Black IPA" on tap at Local Habit in San Diego. (625 characters)

On Tap

Societe Brewing Co.
San Diego, CA

Not nearly as black as other black IPAs, black ales, or darks. It's more of a very dark amber or a light brown. It certainly looks more like a brown ale than a black IPA.

Mild citrus hop character, a bit of a wood-like component, and very mild char, chocolate, and smoke. I wish the hops were more expressive.

Moderate bitterness, a somewhat clashing mixture of citrus/pine hop flavors and some wood/roast/chocolate character. Disapointing. Nothing really leaps out, takes dominance, and makes this particularly enjoyable.

Thinner-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Somewhat thin for the style.

I wasn't impressed with this Societe offering, but it wasn't necessarily flawed. (728 characters)

On tap at the brewery - 04/23/14

A: Reddish brown look. Especially as you near the edge of the glass. Definitely of brown tinge with russet hues and not black. Thin khaki head with some slippery hold and a few random dots of stick sprayed upon the glass.

S: Coffee bean and roasted barley clash with some earthy green hops. Roast seems to dominate and brings forth a touch of wood smoke. Some stale citrus hops squandered underneath. Kind of a funky mix here really. Not particularly bad but not really coming together either. Very interesting to say the least.

T: Roast barley is fairly abundant with lots of coffee notes and a bit of smoky char. I get some nice toasted bread and a dash of meat smoke coming through as well. Interestingly there is healthy dose of earthy green hops and dirty herbal woodiness to the brew as well. Citrus is all but lost here however some dank nugs do appear amidst all the other components. Delivers an upper moderate amount of bitterness to the palate. This one takes on more bitterness than most of Societe’s brews it seems. With the roast it is a touch astringent I would say. Alcohol is masked for the most part though. Again a kind of crazy and unique twist on the style. Can’t say that I have ever tried a Dark IPA with smoke malt additions but that’s exactly what it tastes like here.

M: Moderate body with some fair levels of carbonation providing a decent creamy texture. Moderately high amount of bitterness with a touch of biting sharpness. Finish has a dryness to it and rounds out the feel nicely however.

D: This is definitely a scrappy brew. A bit conflicting to me as it has some moments of greatness but in the end it doesn’t quite come together. Not their best showing but still fairly enjoyable. As in nothing terribly flawed here. Just a bit of an odd mixture to go for from these guys. (1,855 characters)
