Draft at Small Bar in San Diego, CA. March 2013.

Pours a hazy, pale golden yellow color with a two finger frothy, pillowy white head.  Excellent retention, only slowly settling into a thick cap and lasting ring.  Streaks and chunks of soapy lacing left behind.

Floral grassy hop aroma with straw, dank buds and pine needle along with strong citrus/tropical fruit notes and pale malt.  Lots of grapefruit, pineapple and orange peel followed by biscuit and crackery malt.  Pretty dank/resinous.

Fuller bodied than expected with a slightly creamy texture.  Crisp hop bite with dry, sticky bitterness up front lingering over the sweet fruit notes and pale malt backbone into a dry finish.  Grassy with pine needle and dank buds countered by bread biscuit and a dry crackery character. Citrus/tropical fruit presence isn't as strong as in the nose.  Just faintly there adding subtle sweetness.  Still, this beer is light, well balanced and easy to drink.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad – 05/18/13
Standard pint glass

A: The Bachelor pours a soft dull straw gold color with some slight haze to it. Looks pretty light in body. Thin rim of paper white head tops the glass providing a protective layer from the elements for a few moments. There are some nice wavy splashes of stick down the glass.

S: Smells pretty floral with a classic mix of pine and citrus. It is rather zesty with a nice lemony herbal sprig note. There is some very weak pale malt sweetness as well that is almost bread like. Not incredible potent but hop forward none the less.

T: Taste is classical Cascade hops with a firm presence of evergreens, citrus peels of tangerine/orange and lemon, and some herbal weed stems mixed in. The beer has a very dry malt cracker like base that really showcases the hops. Overall perceived bitterness is on the lower end as with most of Societe’s hoppy beers. You get more flavor and aroma additions than bittering per say. Alcohol completely disguised. Another well balanced and drinkable IPA. Makes for a nice warm up beer that is light crisp and refreshingly hoppy but doesn’t annihilate your palate.

M: Very light and even watery thin at times but with a great drying crisp finish that snaps off at the end. Leaving a trail of light residual hop oils and malt sugars.

D: I found this very drinkable being that it is light crisp and hoppy with some classic hop flavors. I think Societe does a fine job in practicing balance with their beers and the Bachelor is no exception. Nothing very innovative or mind blowing but I would gladly have more.

On tap at Tiger! Tiger! on El Cajon Blvd in San Diego. This is the "100% Cascade Hops" version. I had to try it since Cascades continue to be my favorite hop in spite of the wealth of newer varieties. This is quite satisfying with a rich, aromatic flavor and modest bitterness.

Golden amber in the nonic with a nice long-lasting foam. Spicy and spritzy. There is a cracker flavor with some maltiness and a medium body. I would call this a Pale Ale for the more restrained use of hops. It's plenty hoppy but not to the obsessional IPA level. This also has less of an acidic mouthfeel and is mellow yet nicely hop flavored. Clean, clear, crisp and totally drinkable.

Thanks, Craig. Cascade single hop version.

Hazy golden body topped by a finger of clinging froth.

The nose is a great cascade showcase. Herbal and citrus (lemon, orange) notes are dominant, a bit rindy and pithy. Faint tropical fruit, a little chalky and grassy. This is easily the best smelling cascade beer I've tried.

The palate is significantly more herbal and spicy than the nose. Citrus pops out more mid-palate, along with a touch of tropical fruit. There's little malt presence; perhaps a slight breadiness. This is light and super drinkable, though the hop character is more old school than Societe's other hoppy beers.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Clear dark yellow and light golden with a thin cap of near-white, small-bubbled head. Leaves lines of lacing down the glass. Pretty.

Clear Cascade aroma: pine and some light marijuana/dank aroma. A bit of biscuit and sweet bread as well. Nice.

The flavor follows the aroma: mild pine, a bit of dank marijuana, biscuit, and a touch of sweetness. Not overly bitter, and exceptionally drinkable. Some citrus.

Thin to medium bodied, especially for a San Diego IPA. Somewhat water-like mouthfeel. The only disapointing aspect of this beer. Only average.

Good, but a thin mouthfeel will have me ordering The Pupil instead.

Poured into pint glass at the brewery

A: Straw-yellow in color, clear, with a foamy head that leaves a fair amout of lacing around the glass.

S. The nose is fruity and piny...fresh hop essence dominated. Touches of apple and honey-sweet biscuit surround the bouquet.

T. The fruity aspects really stand out...green apples, citrus rind. Cascade hops have a fresh, drying effect, and play well against the honey-sweet malts. Touch of alcohol spice pops up mid-sip, revealing notes of lemon- pepper and grainy husk. Finished short and bitter.

M. Medium mouthfeel, well carbonated.

Another refreshing gem from societe. I guess I'd put this in the West Coast IPA style IPA, but its got aspects if both a pale and an IPA and is highly drinkable.
