12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter.
Pours clear but very dark brown, with a beige head that a bit fizzy, leaves little lacing and has modest retention.

Has a surprisingly strong aroma, with dark roasted grains, chocolate syrup, toffee and vanilla plus a hint of butterscotch. More intersting than appealing.

The taste is medium strong, with a bit too much chocolate and vanilla and virtually no sign of the "Belgian style" promised. Mildly sweet yet still seems too sweet.

Feel: near medium body; medium-light carbonation.

O: more intense than expected from AnBev but has issues of balance.

Shock Top Chocolate Wheat
12 oz. brown bottle

Appearance: Opaque mahogany brown/"black" body beneath a two finger thick head of creamy froth that unfortunately drops fairly steadily. Although it then maintains a solid, fairly thick surface covering, that eventually wanes into more of a whispy surface covering inside a creamy collar. Remarkably, it maintains that solid surface covering for a fairly decent period of time. The lacing, however, is not as good. It initially leaves some nice, thin but completely solid and wide sheets that erode into patterns of spotty patterns, and then eventually slide back into the beer leaving nothing behind.

Smell: Chocolatey and sweetish. Fudge-like. Vanilla. Pretty rich but fairly one-sided. Still, it's impressive. There's just a hint of artificiality to it which is odd because it's supposedly "aged on cocoa and vanilla beans". Still, not bad.

Taste: As you might expect, the taste follows the aroma. There's more depth to the chocolate, and I taste what I recall from my childhood as "Ovaltine" - that must be maltiness coming through. When first tasted cold, mainly chocolate comes through, but as it warms a bit of spice steps in. It's delicate, mainly delivering coriander, and perhaps some coriander or cardamom - there's a hint of a cola flavor to it - but it's underlying. There's not much bitterness to it at all, and the spice works surprisingly well to balance it. It finishes with lingering milk chocolate that becomes more like Hershey's chocolate syrup before it fades, although it really never disappears, it seems to dwindle-on forever (well, for at least a minute or two).

Mouthfeel: Medium-full in body with a median carbonation that leaves it creamy and smooth.

Overall: An excellent dessert beer (it really is the dessert in and of itself, although it could pair remarkably well with a huge range of items). And an excellent holiday beer as well, although I think the sweetness really cuts it's drinkability down to one, or perhaps two for those with a bit of a sweet-tooth.

Tried this on tap at a bar in a shopping center with my wife, while she was on a shopping break. Not much choice at this place... But this was surprisingly dark in appearance. With a low light brown head that dissipated fast, some lacing but not a lot. Smell was so chocolatey that it surprised even the wife (who considers herself a chocolate connosueir) she liked it more than me. It had a light taste and was heavily carbonated... Chocolate was a strong flavor, but it was too sweet for more than a pint...

shock top chocolate wheat 6pk bottles $7.99(OH)

12 oz twist off brown bottle poured into a stemless white wine glass. no freshness date and fresh beer only has no info.

WOW! was not expecting a near jet black appearance. its darker than Guinness. a two finger thin tan head that leaves a thin layer on top. leaves rings of lacing. not bad.

i smell hints of chocolate. a main smell of vanilla. smells of wheat and breads are detected also.

the taste is actually pretty good. starts with a chocolate, slightly bitter cocoa. towards the end the vanilla takes over. the vanilla is good, not real good but not cheap like extract either. i was impressed.

mouth feel is pretty good. i have no complaints. a little watery, but it is 4.3 ABV. for what it is, its OK.

overall i was impressed by this A-B inbev brew. poured darker than Guinness, the chocolate and vanilla are good, blended nicely. reminded me of a porter with low ABV. i would buy this again but i would not hesitate to try something better. i would never turn down one if offered.
