If you're reading this you have the same sentiments as me, I love beer. One thing I love so much about beer is that no matter how long you've been drinking it, your knowledge and palate is always changing, evolving. We all remember the first beer we've tried and can trace our change in palate from our first macro to any quality micro brew. I recently discovered the wonders of micro-breweries almost two years ago and I remember trying pumpkin beers last fall and falling in love with Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale. Something I didn't notice then (when I first drank it) was that this beer is made by Michelob; I just presumed it was a micro - heck it was next to the Bell's section at my grocery store! I was enamored with Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale; I loved it so that I heartedly recommended this beer to my closest friends and anyone who'd listen. Two of my friends and I, last winter, went to Lukas Liquors - a behemoth of a liquor store - which is almost an hour from our homes. We were going for the massive collection and the rarer brews that we simply couldn't get anywhere else. While there I made the discovery that there was one case of Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale left and I freaked out, I wanted a six pack! However I discovered this as I saw a man walking out with the entire case! I was heart-broken; I truly wanted a six pack. Fast forward to today, with me studying for a midterm Friday sitting here drinking a beer. I love the evolution of our palates as we continue to drink beer from different breweries, experience different flavors, styles and techniques. It's a superb delight to look back at my old palate and laugh at my inequities as I stand now on a precipice I wouldn't have imagined a year or so ago. I've been systematically searching for the beers I once liked and laughing at myself. Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale, how I loved it a year ago! Now, as I sit writing this review, I'm truly glad that my roommate and I decided to split a six pack instead of buying one each. Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale is watery and lacking in spice or any true flavor. It has a hint of a smell and a hint of flavor. How could I have loved this beer so much? My old palate is completely laughable; this is not a good beer! Our evolving palates are a microcosm of life, a metaphor of growing up. In our youth we cared for and liked things that we, now as adults, scoff at and try to deny when brought up with friends and family. We try to forget, ignore and change the past, yet by looking back at my prepubescent palate I can appreciate where I sit now, with my DFH Theobroma bottle, Founders Breakfast Stout bottles and Orval bottle behind me and chuckle looking at once was...
