This was truly a pleasant surprise. I had no expectations for this beer has no idea what A-B would do with this type of product. Well done I must say. It is light and east and it is not no-holds barred all out pumpkin or anything; it is a light body caramel flavored ale, with a decent dose of pumpkin and pie spices thrown in the mix. I like the spiced beer attribute and so it suited me just fine this evening.
Appearance: Pours a clear amber - orange hued color with a fizzy beige head that fades to a collar. Minimal lacing. Large carbonation bubbles continue to rise for some time until they settle to just a small stream of tiny bubbles.
Smell: I twisted off the cap and got my hopes up right away a burst of rich pumpkin pie flavors filled my nose. They did seem to fade a bit between opening and then pouring into my pint glass and walking up stairs to the computer. Still, very pleasant caramel malts, pumpkin and pie spices with cinnamon, nutmeg and clove leading the way.
Taste: The taste follows the nose but to a more largely caramel character. It is a malty light ale flavored with pumpkin and caramel and with suggestions of apple vanilla, and again "very pleasant caramel malts, pumpkin and pie spices with cinnamon, nutmeg and clove leading the way." There may even be a hint of ginger in the aftertaste. Nice.
Mouthfeel: The low point of the beer is the mouthfeel. Though it is not bad it seems a bit too light and fizzy. It is a very burp inducing beer and simply feels a little to spritzer-ish in the mouth and belly. Trough that bit of over carbonation, there is still a sweet malt backbone that is noticeable, just not big enough.
Drinkability: With the exception of the mouthfeel, this could be a quite drinkable beer. Fortunately the burps it causes are tasty (I know that's gross sorry TMI). It is approachable and seasonal and a worthy offering for brewery that takes some rap around here.
Hope this is helpful.
