Michelob Bavarian Style Wheat, an authentic German-style Hefeweizen brewed with wheat malt. Not to be confused with the discontinued Michelob Hefeweizen (American-style wheat), this brew is fermented with a southern German Hefeweizen yeast strain. And true to style, its also an all-malt and unfiltered offering.
As expected, the 12-ounce bottle releases a cloudy, pale, straw-colored beer with plenty of yeast in suspension. Head is pure white, with a tight, creamy lace and plenty of healthy-looking stick and stay on the glass. A soft clove spiciness in the nose goes deep with sweet grain suggestions, followed by unripe banana, a hint of fruitiness and notes of lemon oil.
Body is light, and the mouthfeel smooth. The palate gathers apple peel, light clove notes and a thin sweetness thats touched with caramel. In the middle, ripe and juicy fresh wheat malt with pear edge, while a husky, grainy, wheat twang livens things up. Suggestions of bubblegum are noted. Theres very little bitterness, but a slight lemony sourness, banana pith and light hop leaf character that, combined, increase the perceived bitterness. Yeast is rather neutral, a bit chalky. Some medicinal phenols show through toward the finish. Finish dries the palate, with a lingering wheat and barley husk.
Putting brewery politics and unforgiving palates aside, I dig this beer. Its authentic, highly drinkable and tasty, and the yeast byproducts created by ABs particular yeast strain create a much more subtle beer, especially compared to other examples that tend to be overpowered with strong banana and clove notes.
Serve cool in a traditional wheat beer glass, and ensure that you get every last drop of yeast in there. Its part of the experience, as the yeast lends much to the aroma and taste. Youll want to pour the beer, leave around a half an inch in the bottle, gently swirl it and pour the rest into the glass. AB actually has serving instructions on the back label, which is pretty awesome for the uninitiated. And for those wondering, Hefe means yeast and weizen means wheat in German.
The beer will be available nationally in ABs Michelob Specialty Sampler Collection beginning September 25, 2006; the 20-pack will also include Michelob Porter, Pale Ale, Märzen and AmberBock. A 12-pack will also be available, with the same lineup sans AmberBock.

12 oz bottle with a "Born On Date" freshness date on the label.
A- Hazed from the yeast that was poured into the glass, two fingers of froth stand steady after a hard pour.
S- Aromas of light ripe banana, powdered clove and a nutty yeast with some breadiness from the malt in the back.
T&M- Crisp with a creamy medium body, nice sharpness of clove and grain. Mild fruitiness that boarders banana. Long lingering cracker-like maltiness with some faded clove.
D- Wow! Not bad at all, a different take on the style. I think there is only 35% wheat malt which make for a slightly different malt character. Very drinkable but this was far better on draft when I tried it back in August.
