Opened 12 Fl. ounce brown bottle and poured into Nonic tumbler. Opening of bottle was delayed as (I didn't realize that Budweiser would use anything but a twist-top. After bandaging crown-cap ripped hand and call dental clinic about teeth, bottle opener was obtained and bottle properly breached.)
Pours a frothy cream colored head atop a dark amber clear brew. Head measured about 2" that dissipated to about ¼" leaving lace on sides of glass.
Smell as pouring was a sweet maple like smell, but no further maple smell was noticed on evaluation. Smell of light malts obtained, otherwise subdued. Taste is clean but sort of plain. It does have a nice body to it and is filling on the palate, however, carbonation seams a bit high. Well balanced alcohol for a 5.1% brew. Finish is nice and slightly hoppy leaving a lingering but pleasant aftertaste.
When I first heard about American Ale, I laughed, but I will honestly say that it turned out better than I expected and while I am not 100% sold on it, I applaud A-B on its efforts to reach out to those of us that want something different than their most popular product.
