Notes/Commercial Description:
Shock Top Wheat IPA is no traditional beer. It’s a unique hybrid that combines the fresh flavor and smoothness of wheat beer with the crisp hop bitterness of an IPA. The result is a beer that is truly like no other.

To serve, pour down the side of the glass until a half inch is left in the bottle. Swirl the remaining brew and pour to produce a rich, thick collar of foam that releases the citrusy Cascade hop aroma.

[Best served in a Shaker glass]

The pour was a hazy medium orange with a slight yellow hue and a large (2-3 finger) white fizzy head that was mostly diminishing and had a little bit of spotty lacing.

The aroma had a mild funky odor, along with hay malts, grassy hops, and a musty yeast with a just a light hint of citrus (lemon and orange).

The taste was a tiny bit sweet and a tad acidic with a mild wheat feel at first and then progressed into a more pronounced yeast flavor that was very mildly bitter and had a note of citrus at the end. The flavor lasted an average duration with taste of wheat lasting beyond any of the other flavors.

Mouthfeel was light in body and watery in texture with a fizzy carbonation.

Overall not a bad beer, but not a good one either. So much for AB Inbev trying to break into the Craft Beer market…

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #62 (Mar 2012):

LOOK: Hazed gold

SMELL: Dried grass, orange peel, faint coriander, chalky, clean, somewhat absent

TASTE: Slick, semi-crisp, pulling orange peel, hop bitterness, muted coriander, grainy, bread crust, very dry

The whole entire character of the beer meets the nose and palate halfway, then just drops off like it was never even there. What is the reason for such a lackluster aftertaste? It had potential. Perhaps this beer is what differentiates between macros and what is going on deep in the craft beer world.

The beer pours a hazy golden-orange color with a white head. The aroma is fairly faint, with a hint of perfume and a little bit of wheat. The flavor is also fairly faint. There is some light fruit and some perfume, as well as a little bit of grass and some wheat. The flavor is fairly muddled, with nothing really standing out. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Appears a nice deep copper with hints of apricot in the color with an off white creamy textured head billowing thick. Aroma has sharp citrus notes amongst at billowing white ale malt base with hints of coriander and sharp wheat. Aroma has a citrus notes with some eartlhy hop highlights hints of spice and yeast with some coriander go along. Flavor bitterness with pale malts citrus, spice notes in the finish not as bad or horrible as it sounds. Even bodied carbonation going on smooth, yet oily textured wtih chewy yeast body moments. Drinkability is decent not the base wheat IPA I've had or the worse...a decent shot at it really.

Big off white head quickly dies over a honey colored IPA.

Aroma is a light sweet grain with hints of oranges.

Light orange peel, some grains, and maybe a very light hops hint in the taste of this product.

A light bodied beer with little if any aftertaste.

A pint at the Yard House in Waikiki.

This beer appears a cloudy dark burnished amber colour, with one skinny finger of thin foamy white head, which beats it rather quickly, leaving some sparse streaky lace around the glass.

It smells of weak grainy wheat, a bit of muted citrus fruit, and little else. The taste is generic grain, to this offering's credit, but with very little to recommend its supposed wheat origins, with some weird pastry-like malt adding to the morass.

The bubbles are fairly sedate, the body an agreeable medium weight, and actually quite smooth. It finishes sweet, the muddled malt seeing but a mere blip in the way of meager hop offset.

Wheaty? Maybe. IPA? Hell to the no. But maybe that's not the idea - my girl just described this to the point of an AB marketing exec's wildest dream - as for me, it is neither all that wheat-like, or all that bitter. Target demographics, indeed.

Appearance - Pours a hazy, orange-ish amber with an off-white, finger width head. Decent retention. Thin, spotty lacing.

Smell - Aroma consists mainly of strong wheat notes, behind this a bouquet of citrus character and a touch of milkiness.

Taste - Wheat, corriander, and a trainwreck. The little bit of citrus hop bitterness this brew provides completely clashes with the witbier elements. The finish, like most all the Shock Top line, is a vacant, hollow shell of flavor. Finishes with a touch of heat... at 5.8%?

Mouthfeel - Light in body, with a fair amount of carbonation. A touch watery on the back end.

Overall - IPA? What a joke. I've had brown ales with more hop character than this. Just another beer trying to cash in on the IPA trend. This is the last of the Shock Top I'm ever trying. I can't do this to myself anymore. I expect them to be bad, and they're even worse than the already low expectations I have for them.

Pours a cloudy, dark orange with a thick layer of foamy head that has decent retention. The nose has notes of straw, grapefruit, and orange peel. The flavor is light, straw-like, and citrusy with notes of orange peel. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, smooth, and a little crisp.

This is a rather hoppy beer for a pale wheat, but it comes across a little unbalanced. The malt character isn't built to withstand the citrusy, bitter hop character. It's a good idea, but I'd go for a Lil Sumpin Sumpin or a Saranac White IPA before I get another one of these.

Appearance: Ruby red. Pretty good in the lacing/foam categories.

Smell: Mostly caramel. Nothing terribly distinctive.

Taste/Mouthfeel: A bit sour, as if there is too much orange. It still does taste IPA-ish, I just think they tried to hit you over the head with citrus. Mouthfeel is a bit watery at the end.

Overall Drinkability: Easily Shock Top's best spin-off.

A - Pours copper with a thin white foam. Minimal lacing. Visible carbonation.

S - Noticable scent of fresh wheat. Nothing in the way of hops, but does have a fresh scent.

T - Flavor is of hearty wheat, some residual sugar, and a dash of citrus. Again, do not look for that hoppy bite; it isn't there.

M - Quite refreshing. Feels light, smooth, and easy to drink.

O - In short, the label is misleading. If you can deal witht hat it actually is a decent beer. Just understand this is a wheat ale, and not an ipa.
