Style | ABV
American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.80% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Shock Top Wheat IPA is no traditional beer. It’s a unique hybrid that combines the fresh flavor and smoothness of wheat beer with the crisp hop bitterness of an IPA. The result is a beer that is truly like no other.

To serve, pour down the side of the glass until a half inch is left in the bottle. Swirl the remaining brew and pour to produce a rich, thick collar of foam that releases the citrusy Cascade hop aroma.

I felt as though this beer celebrates being mediocre.
They tried to do something somewhat original and that's commendable I suppose.
I am a pharmacist by trade, and it's illegal to mislabel a drug product, and that's
the situation this brew finds itself in.
Pours ok color, head gone in seconds, leaves no lacing on glass, good carbonation.
smell faint generic wheat beer.
Taste is the problematic part...
Huge let down. It in absolutely no way resembles a Pale Ale in taste.
No complexity. No real flavor.
I was looking for something more the whole time drinking.
Anheuser-Busch should be in court for a mislabeling.
Not a pale ale at all... couldn't find more than a note of hops in it.
Also had a weird "hard to put my finger on" after taste.
Will not reconsider.

Appearance: Cloudy; orangish/amber; big frothy head, long lasting, good lacing

Aroma: Very faint hops; not much aroma at all; what little there is is citrusy

Taste: Wow, not much flavor at all; pretty thin and watery overall; no complexity and hardly any flavor; extremely disapppointing

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

I was disappointed with this beer as I thought it would be better. It is way overhopped and lacking in maltiness. It is almost flavorless if you put aside the hop taste. It has a poor color and almost no mouth. The head seems to just disappear as soon as it was poured. I did not detect any wheat aroma at all and wonder if they used any wheat malt when brewing this beer.

Very light, very little hop flavor. This should not be considered an IPA by any means. Pathetic head with nonexistent lacing. Other than that, really not a bad beer. Nice color, easy drinking smooth taste. If they could add some more carbonation and call this just a wheat ale instead of a wheat IPA I would have much more respect for this brew.

It would be more educational to do blind tastings of these industrial brews. It's so easy to have prejudices, deserved or not. From the 12 oz bottle from the supermarket. My first Shock Top.

These guys know about carbonation. The smell is not very inviting. Flavors are muted and a little muddy. This one tastes like it has some margarita mix in it. Not sweet, however. Not malty, not hoppy. It's just a beery taste with some earthy, murky flavors. I can't actually taste anything like hops, but it does have a bitter aftertaste that is far from pleasant. There's really nothing to hate in this, but it doesn't seem to have any of the good flavors of either an IPA or a Witbier. Plenty of concept, though.

Serving Type: 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Golden brown in color with a white medium head that dissipates rather quickly leaving behind a medium amount of lacing. I would have expected a slightly lighter color and better head retention but it is not bad appearance.

Smell: Despite it's claim as to be a wheat IPA, the wheat malt dominates the nose rather than the hops. While the wheat malt is pleasant, the hops are pretty minimal with minor notes of lemon, orange, and grass.

Taste: While there is some flavor of wheat malt, hop notes of lemon, and some decent bitterness (for an ABinBev wheat ale), unfortunately the thing that sticks out of is a watery flavor. Very disappointing.

Mouthfeel: Too light and watery. Semi-dry. Carbonation feels off and I can't tell if more or less would even be better. Strange description but it seems to have a slippery mouthfeel. Not pleasant.

Overall: Very disappointing. In my attempts to always try new beers, I decided to give this one a shot despite my tendency to shy away from Shock Top (homebrewer and I can't reuse their twist off bottles). Save your money on this one and buy something else.

12 ounce bottle
Served in a weizen glass

A - I followed the instructions for the pour. I swirled with the yeast at the bottom of my bottle to ensure a nice ring of head and citrus aroma. This beer is a hazy orange color. I got about an inch of off-white head.

S - I really have to search for the citrus. It is mild. I get some orange and lemon zest.

T - It tastes like a blue moon. I was hoping for some of the grapefruit and orange to come through, but it is bland like a piece of cardboard.

M - It feels like a wheat beer. Sadly, this is the only aspect of this beer that does not disappoint.

O - I wondered why this was listed as a wheat beer and not an IPA. My first drink answered that question. It tastes like Blue Moon. Put an orange slice in it and that is what you have. There are no discernible IPA characteristics to this beer. It's just a below average wheat beer.

A - Pours a deep copper with a two finger slightly off white head. Leaves no lacing.

S - Small amounts of wheat and lemon zest followed by traces of malt.

T - Predominantly wheaty up front, followed by a small amount of lemon and a small amount of orange in the finish.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

o - Overall, I don't think this is an IPA. It would fare better in the Wheat Ale category.

This pours a cloudy, golden copper color with a beige head. The scent is a mild aroma of wheat and hops. The taste is not really a wheat beer and not really an IPA. There is a lot more of a mellow citrus taste than anything. The taste isn’t very strong and the texture is kind of weak. This is probably one of the weaker offerings from the Shocktop line.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #62 (Mar 2012):

LOOK: Hazed gold

SMELL: Dried grass, orange peel, faint coriander, chalky, clean, somewhat absent

TASTE: Slick, semi-crisp, pulling orange peel, hop bitterness, muted coriander, grainy, bread crust, very dry

The whole entire character of the beer meets the nose and palate halfway, then just drops off like it was never even there. What is the reason for such a lackluster aftertaste? It had potential. Perhaps this beer is what differentiates between macros and what is going on deep in the craft beer world.

There is a watered-down honeysuckle taste with heavy citrus overtones. The hops are present, but do not introduce themselves. This is the Anheuser-Busch of IPA's with a citrus-wheat twist. I enjoy pounding these because they don't have a heavy or pronounced flavor, but make us hop-lovers laugh in a "hey, this ain't too terrible" sorta way. This is why I like this beer.

Pours sort of a cloudy dark tan, with a very light head. It says on the bottle to pour until a half inch is left in bottle, swirl that around, and pour to produce "a rich, thick collar of foam to release citrusy cascade hop aroma". I did this but there wasn't very much of a thick head. It has a very faint citrus smell, certainly nothing offensive, but not overwhelming either. Taste is average, like the smell not offensive and certainly drinkable, but not great either. It is probably something that you could drink a couple of, might quench your thirst, but wouldn't ever hit you where you stop and say "damn that is good". That citrus taste has that hoppy ipa kick at the end, but is less encouraging then other, better ipa. Mouthfeel doesn't have a lot of texture or anything going on.A non offensive tolerable beer that won't knock your socks off but won't kill you either.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 1.5 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 2

Appearance - Pours a hazy, orange-ish amber with an off-white, finger width head. Decent retention. Thin, spotty lacing.

Smell - Aroma consists mainly of strong wheat notes, behind this a bouquet of citrus character and a touch of milkiness.

Taste - Wheat, corriander, and a trainwreck. The little bit of citrus hop bitterness this brew provides completely clashes with the witbier elements. The finish, like most all the Shock Top line, is a vacant, hollow shell of flavor. Finishes with a touch of heat... at 5.8%?

Mouthfeel - Light in body, with a fair amount of carbonation. A touch watery on the back end.

Overall - IPA? What a joke. I've had brown ales with more hop character than this. Just another beer trying to cash in on the IPA trend. This is the last of the Shock Top I'm ever trying. I can't do this to myself anymore. I expect them to be bad, and they're even worse than the already low expectations I have for them.

A- meh.

S- Smelled ok, but didn't excite me. Somewhat bland smelling.

T- The taste left something to be desired for me. Like the smell, bland. Nothing exciting.

M- underwhelming and bland.

O- I assumed that I wouldn't really like this, but tried it anyways. I originally picked it up for my gf thinking she might like it assuming it would be a light ipa. I was disappointed even with low expectations.

I'd suggest passing this up.

Haters gonna hate! Ok, your right, this beer is buy no means subtle or intricately crafted. In fact, its about as close to an IPA as Guinness is to a porter, however, its beauty is in its simplicity and deception.
Appearance- Who cares, its 7$ for a 6 Pack and the bottle is pretty cool looking.
Smell- its really not an IPA so you don't have to be looking for hints of floral aromas because, trust me, it ain't there.
Taste- it is one dimensional but it takes that one flavor a long way. Its got that citrusy wheat after taste that we look for in the summer. Its light bodied so you can easily put down a sixer of these without getting overpowered. And look at the brightside, you can smoke a fat cigar with this beer because there are no subtle flavors you'll be missing out on.
Overall- this is an underrated American gas-station beer. You all want it to be something that its not, and its saying "no ways bro", I'm the price of bud light but without the guilt!

I bought a six-pack of Shock Top Wheat IPA in a grocery store earlier this week. I think it was around $6.00. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a copper/gold color, hazy, with a modest white head.

Smell is faint, and malty. A grain aroma mostly with very little fruit esters.

Taste is a cereal flavor, with a dry bitter aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is fairly crisp and clean.

Overall just an average beer. Not a good wheat ale or an IPA. Probably trying too hard to be to be a crossover beer. Glad I tried it, but I won't have it again.

Pours hazed (unfiltered) dark amber with a thin head that slowly dissipates. No real lacing sticks.

The smell is of citrus with wet crackers and slight coriander.

The taste is of caramel, wheat tang, dried orange, slight coriander and a slightly metallic, dry finish.

The feel is fairly crisp. Light to medium-bodied, but not thin or watery, with soft carbonation.

IPA? I don't know - it's a hoppy, slightly more alcoholic Belgian wheat. The cascade hops are there, but it's no "hop-bomb". It's "Shocktop" with more hops and a bit higher abv. Not bad for what it is, IMO.

Pale wheat ale? Ipa?

It doesn't matter.
This beer is not impressive regardless. I'll be honest, the hops add a nice punch to this particular sub-par wheat beer. The wheat beer actually seems to stand out more here than in the Shock Top beers I've had.

Big orange peel notes... Like crazy ridiculous orange peel notes. Lots of coriander spice as well. The hops add a some citrusy notes to boot, but not nearly enough to call this an ipa. And hardly any bitterness. Rather dry finish.

I could see this beer impressing BMC drinkers because I'll give some credit; there actually is some flavor here... It just doesn't cut it in the big leagues.

Pours a lightly hazy, amber/burnt orange with a fizzy off white head that dissipates quickly.

Wheat, with a prominent sweet citric orange note. Smells like orange candy almost.

Again a wheat base, with a sweet, citric orange finish.

Medium body, low fizzy, prickly carbonation.

Fairly dissapointing. The orange notes in the nose come off as orange flavor candy, though it is a little better executed in the taste. Plus slightly low carbonation.

Pours a hazy, copper/amber color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and slight lacing. Smells of sweet malt, pale malt, hint of alcohol, hint of citrus hops, hint of wheat, and a hint of sugar. Fits the style of an American Pale Wheat Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of earthy malt, slight pale malt, hint of wheat, hint of sweet malt, and slight citrus hops. Overall, the blend is not very pleasing (almost comes off buttery, but not quite) and the aroma is muted. The appearance and feel are both decent.

Pours a hazy golden orange color. with a tall white head. Nose is nice with citrus and floral hop notes, a good bready aroma, and a bit of citrus peel and wheat. Might be a little grass both on the palate and aroma to go along with the floral and citrus notes. A touch sweet, but a mild bitterness on the finish. Nice and dry with high carbonation. Quite a bit of orange on the palate. Not bad, actually.
