Poured similar to what amber bock (its replacement?) color is, but a little darker, but thinner in appearance, with less head and even less lace and retention. Aroma came off more macro-ish, lacking any sweet lagerness or roasted aroma.

Taste, thin, had some bitterness. Didn't come up with anything substantial, the malt was all about the color, not the amount. Get the SRM's up with no substance, no appreciable flavors here, a weird sour bitterness, not associated with hops or yeast? Huh? Just like colored water that was really, really old.

I can see why it ain't around anymore, this was right up there w/ Lowenbrau dark.

The label bears "Classic Dark", and the abv. is 5.2% rather than the reported 5.0% here. Coming in a 355ml brown bottle, bottled on 03.04.07, served chilled in a short stemmed goblet. BTW, this is the 1st bottle of beer that I've consumed since coming back home (Taipei) last week for a short trip.

A: pours a dark brown hue, with a thin fluffy beige foam and rather lively carbonation. Looking normal and not too bad actually.
S: sweet nuts, corn syrup, and caramelised sugar abound, with a touch of chocolate wandering aimlessly. Very thin, and simplistic, yet not at the brink of being a disaster.
T: a metallic and lightly sour taste of roasted malts fills the palate, added by a faint touch of nuttiness, Chinese red bean paste, and brown sugar. Spritzy finish with a wee bit of roasted bitterness, as well as an unwanted taste of syrupy sugar...
M&D: the mouthfeel is quite fizzy but not too spritzy while the body is roughly at the medium level, but the finishing mouthfeel is rather bad, thin-ish at best... All in all this is an unimpressive beer and definitely not a successful pretender for Schwarzbier, making one impressed (ironically) about the consistent quality of A-B as a giant brewer - "poor", that is.
