I ordered this on my last trip to the Bavaria Hof Restaurant in Schaumburg, IL $5.50 for a 330 ml brown bottle with no freshness date.

This is a beautiful looking beer. Not as cloudy as most hefeweizens, this one produced a slightly hazed deep golden color with 3 full fingers of fluffy white head on top. Retention was forever. I finally gave up waiting for the head to go down and just dove in for my first sip, coming up with white foam on my nose. The lacing was good as well.

Not as much banana/clove aroma as I expected from a hefeweizen, but lots of wheat and lemon instead.

Wheat and bready malt backbone with only a hint of banana/clove flavor. The lemon/citrus that was detected in the nose is also very prominent in the taste. Low bitterness and well hidden alcohol. With all the lemon it was a bit on the tart side, but I didn't mind that at all.

Smooth, light body with medium carbonation.

While not the typical classical hefeweizen, I loved it and will seek it out in 6-packs in area liquor stores, which should have it at much lower cost than restaurant prices.

500ml bottle served in a weizen glass.

A: Pours a very cloudy orange to beige color forming a huge, thin bubbled, soapy and creamy head. Good retention. Very persistent, leaving tons of lingering lacings left in the glass

S: Strong sweet and fruity upfront. Strong notes of banana and wheat. Quite bready too

T: Sweet grains upfront. Strong notes of wheat and pale grains. Banana esters. Quite fruity too. Light notes of hops. Very mild bitterness. Smooth and bready, as expected

M: Light, smooth and creamy body. Good carbonation. Fruity and bready aftertaste

O: Very easydrinking. Standard german Weissbier

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #66 (July 2012):

LOOK: Hazed-over pale amber, excellent head & lacing

SMELL: Banana bread, dusty clove, bread, green peppercorn, light bubblegum, ripe fruit, yeast

TASTE: Incredibly smooth, big breadiness, medium body, green plantain chips, peppery, allspice, modest hopping, grainy, nutty yeast; grainy, semi-dry finish

More US brewers are emulating this beer style with great success, and it seems to be the trend style of the year as well. With that said, this brand might have a tougher road ahead if it’s trying to make its way into the US beer market. Overall, a good sip and worthy of your time.

Tasted on tap in Frankfurt airport in a traditional wheat beer glass.

A - Color is medium gold. Cloudy, but still lets light through. Thick, white head. Massive lacing.

S - Clean wheat and pilsner grain aroma. The malt is well balanced against grassy hops and clove.

T - Clean malt and wheat flavor. Clove is muted. No banana noted. Solid hops bitterness and grassy flavor.

M - Medium to full body. Smooth and creamy feel. Prickly carbonation. Light alcohol presence.

O - This is a very cleanly made and balanced Weizen. Surprising creaminess and low yeast esthers make this stand out from the crowd for me.

Arrives a straw-grapefruit blend in color. Completely cloudy yet translucent, it almost looks lit from behind. Good lace for a hefeweizen.
Smell is somewhat restrained but notes of malt, cloves, bananas, and yeast. Well balanced.
Taste is more forward than the nose with the same malty backbone carrying bananas, clove, nutmeg, yeast and vanilla notes. Very good balance. Good complexity.
Medium bodied with a pronounced and tangy effervescence. Drying from the middle on. A mere whiff of warming late. Well done.

A: Cloudy orange yellow, white head.

S: Wheaty, grainy, slightly bananery.

T: Not a lot going on at all. None of that Hefe banana-like goodness even though it's in the nose. It's not watery but it's very insipid.

O: A very boring beer. Never again. The cheery orange label promised a mouthfull of citrusy refreshment so what a disappointment.

11.2oz bottle poured into a weizen glass.

A: Cloudy golden color with a towering rocky white head that retains very well. Lacing is foamy and clumpy.

S: Bready wheat, hints of banana. Yeasty. clove and white pepper.

T: Clove and medicinal tastes right up front. Very yeasty. White pepper and spices. Bready wheat. Subtle tart snap. Wheaty and yeasty finish.

M: Light bodied. Somewhat creamy, but not as full and frothy as it should be. Somewhat thin and watery. Blast of scrubbing carbonation.

O: A rather bland, commercialized hefeweizen. Lacking in body. Really nothing special.

Hazy orange color with lots of thick head with an eternal retention.
Mild aroma of yeast, wheat and cloves. You get less banana and citric than usual.
Flavor is wheatier and more condimented than fruity, though I got some pears. Hints of honey and heavier on cloves, with a yeasty and dry aftertaste.
Light to medium body with medium carbonation with tiny bubbles and a spicy feeling.
A Hefeweizen that is more condimented and malty than average, and light on the fruity notes. You pick your preference, anyway good for a change.

Never seen this German brew before, until I walked into my local Costco and bought a mixed case (18 bottles) of German beer. This was one of them.

Cloudy amber, orange peel color. Decent bubblingNice two finger head after the pour. Recedes to an almost full layer of foam. The lacing is not bad.

Yeasty hint of cloves and banana peel aroma. Add some lightly toasted malt wheat bread crust. Smells sweet and a little dry.

Yeasty dryness and sweetness. Banana peels, alittle toasted malt. Well balanced and rounded. Smooth and delicate finish with good carbonation. Nothing special, but not bad either. Great for a hot Summer's day relaxing. Great drinking beer.

12oz bottle, best before 5/12/13, pours very cloudy & ruddy, yellow in color topped with a tall, white head that holds incredible retention & leaves sticky lace on the glass.
Armas are bready yeast, wheat, bubblegum, faint banana, slight clovy spice. Tastes are spicy clove, bready yeast, wheat, a little banana, finishes spicy with a tingle on the tongue. Creamy texture and nearly full bodied. Overall, pretty good, but maybe needed a degree or 2 warmer while fermenting to bring out the estery banana and bubblegum notes, while toning down the clove, as it's pretty dominant. Still a fairly decent Hefeweizen though.

S - Dry bread, creamsicle, orange zest, banana peel.

T - Big, sweet wheat note right up front. Mango, bread crust, honey, banana bread. A nice long finish that really clings to your palate.

M - Medium body. Light lemon brightness. Thick backend.

Picked up a single at EuroMarket in Astoria for $2. It poured a murky amber with a short white head. Mmm, there's a nice juicy aroma and flavor with a mix of banana and orange peel. There's a mild spice and smooth bready undertone. The clove is mild and pleasant, but the flavors seems to drop out toward the finish. You might say it's too clean for a hefe, but I like it. The banana notes ar especially tasty without going over the top or dominating the beer. Give this a try.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a hazy bright orange hue with a three finger frothy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured mild esters and a touch adjunct like sweetness.

The taste consisted of a subtle wheat spice and touch of esters.

The mouthfeel was toward the thinner side of the style with dome chewiness.

Overall a serviceable hefe.

-A very sessionable hefeweizen if drank cold
-Subdued banana and clove compared to others of this style

Appearance- Cloudy amber with one finger frothy head that sits on top all the way down. Well carbonated with lots of bubbles. Leaves good lacing.

Smell- Banana bread, yeasty smell, touch of lemon.

Taste- Quite dry. Nice contrast of bitter flavours, wheat and yeast, touch of toffee. The flavours stay on the palate for a while. Easy to drink, refreshing, smooth wheat beer.

Mouthfeel- Starts off creamy but thins out a bit half way down the glass , however, a refreshing beer.

Overall- A tasty well made wheat beer that is very refreshing, would definitely buy again, this beer would go down well chilled on a hot summers day.

Another treat procured in Winnipeg...

A - Pours a hazy golden colour, thumb of egg white head with solid retention and sporadic lacing.

S - Scent dominated by bready wheat, hints of clove and peppery spice.

T - Nice bready malts with a citrus bitterness, hints of clove and bananas. The bitterness lingers alongside a dose of grassy wheat.

M - Medium bodied, extremely smooth and a touch of dryness on the finish.

O - Incredibly drinkable, solid flavour profile and a tasty example of the style. This is a great go-to hefe, and certainly worth a try if you're a fan of the style.

S - Strong eastery aromas of sour fruit, herbs and spices, light grainy

T - Starts with some graininess, yeasy flavours much more subdued, somewhat mineral flavour, a little dissapointing given the aromatic promise

M - Lightish body, slightly flat, light bready finish

The beer is clouded amber, has an off-white head that leaves little lacing, but some curtains.

The smell is fruity, spicy and yeasty, banana, oranges, cardamom, clove.

Starting with sweet wheat bread, banana, oranges, cardamom and clove spiciness.

Medium high carbonation, a fresh feeling, almost coarse and a slightly dry finish.

A fresh and refreshing crisp Weizen (less citric than on tap last year).

Finally I get to review Schofferhofer (or "The Hoff" as I like to call it). Man (or woman) I have been drinking this for many years, ever since I was first introduced to wheat beers this has been one I have come back to again and again... mainly for the price of course. Well let's get to it "Hoff".

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a 500ml Stein the way the German god(s) intended.

A: Nice cloudy orange body with a 1cm pale white head.

S: Banana, cloves and... dried apricot!?! There is a distinct apricot aroma with this Hefe, which makes me question whether or not all Hefe's have the same distinct apricot aroma and I've just missed it or it's just this one... only one way to find out [goes out and buys every Hefeweizen on the market].

T: Wheat beer territory - creamy banana, cloves, some caramel malts and a slight musty yeast (not as pronounced in The Hoff though). It's a little lacking in flavour, I'm used to more creamy/banana cloveyness ("It is too a word!"), and this brew is lacking a teensy tiny bit.

M: Mmmmm... like a cold cream bath... with bubbles.

D: Drinks OK. Lacking in flavour compared to its brethren however it is also cheaper than competition, and that is the beersumer choice you have to weigh up when you buy this beer (price versus flavour). Still I would prefer and pay for the Weihenstephaner over this.

Food match: Barvarian food was made for Hefeweizen (or the other way around). Every time I taste a wheat beer I'm reminded of the Hofbrau Haus and it's banquetesque meals. In any case German food overall is the best match.

It pours a light apricot/orange colour, and the head is very insubstantial. It only forms a small layer on top of the beer. It is slightly hazy, but less hazy than a typical hefeweizen.

The aroma is dominated by citrus and a bit of yeast. It smells quite refreshing, and some light malted wheat aroma mellows out the sharp citrus notes.

The flavour is light and fragrant with a hint of hop bitterness. It doesn't have a strong malt backbone, but is slightly sweet towards the end. It is very bubbly as it rolls across the tongue, and on the thin side.

Overall, it's highly drinkable. However, not an expecially great hefeweizien.
