22oz : SN IPA Glass

Pours an amber orange with a thick, foamy off white head and nice lacing.

Very well balanced blend of roasty, cocoa and citric hops.

Medium+ body with foamy carbonation.

A very well executed IPA. The chocolate blends very nicely with the hops to create a unique and interesting beer.

Bomber brought back to Colorado by my awesome wife. Served cold into a pint glass.

Geezers Need Excitement is a beautiful dark copper color with great clarity. The head is thick and long-lasting with nice sticky lace left behind.

Aroma is a slightly strange combination of piney Pacific Northwest hops and a slightly sweet dark chocolate.

Flavor brings those same strange elements together but in a bigger way. Lots of great hops bitterness and flavor, a good dose of dark bittersweet chocolate, and an amber malt backbone.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated.

Overall a very good yet unusual beer. With the description, I expected more of a black IPA with chocolate but it's more of a traditional IPA with chocolate added. An interesting idea but I'd be surprised to see other breweries do the same.

Bottle opened on 4.27.13
Belmont 16th Anniversary Beer

A - Pours a hazy, very dark orange with a nice foamy yellow-tan head with good retention.

S - Chocolate, bitter hops.

T - Chocolate with a bitter hop finish. Somehow this works.

D - Good carbonation and a nice medium body.

O - This one is unique. Mostly chocolate with a bitter hop finish. Better then I thought it would be.

22oz bottle from Belmont Station.

A: Reddish copper color with a one inch cream head that’s loathe to dissipate.

N: Pineapple and spruce hops mixed with a hardened baker’s chocolate. Lots of citrus and some caramel. Sweetened bread. It’s a very interesting dynamic in how it transitions from hops to chocolate to malt.

T: Lightly bitter with more sweetness from the chocolate. Bready and balanced. However, as it warms, it develops a rather unpleasant astringency. M: Resinous, dry, and medium bodied. A light touch of alcohol.

O: This works a ton better than you might expect given the description. The hops and the chocolate both ’pop’ and they don’t clash, but it’s far better when it’s cold than warm in order to avoid the striking bite.

Bomber bottle picked up at Belmont Station a few weeks ago. Poured into a balloon glass.

Deep orange colored body with zero visible carbonation. Great thick collar of peach-colored foam sitting on top about two fingers high. It appears to be leaving its mark on the glass...a good sign for this Chocolate IPA.

The aroma smells strongly of dank West Coast hops, with notes of grapefruit, lemon peel, and mango. That mango smell is also kind of a mash-up from the citrusy hops and this faint, meaty chocolate aroma. It is not very distinct, and the hops definitely take the lead in the aroma.

Funny...this reminds me a lot of the Stone Dayman Coffee IPA. The hop profile is about identical. Up front, you can taste the chocolate, though it is not a very strong presence like you would find in a chocolate stout or anything. the hops take over from there and deliver a floral, bitter finish, with only a light sweetness to balance it out. The chocolate lingers into the aftertaste. Very nice.

Big fluffy head, smooth carbonation, medium to full bodied beer, and the bitterness is mild enough that it doesn't strip the enamel off your teeth.

I expected a bit more chocolate than what was there, but overall I wasn't disappointed. I think I would do it differently, and maybe dial the hops back a notch. Definitely a unique idea, which when I bought it was inspired by a chocolate that incorporated hops. the brewer liked the taste and decided to replicate that in a beer. Really good, original, and worth a try!

This is a Chocolate IPA from Gigantic Brewing. Brewed for Belmont Stations 16 th Anniversary.
Thanks to Ramnuts for the bottle.

A- Clear brown sugar color. Dirty white head. 4/5

S- Pine aroma. If I didn't know better I would think thins to be a good IPA. A nice whiff of chocolate detected in the aroma. Coco pebbles? 4/5

T- Pine and bitter chocolate in the taste. Very interesting. Very good. Very balanced. Small amount of bitterness. 4.25/5

M- Perfect for an IPA. The chocolate is there for taste alone. It doesn't effect the mouthfeel at all. 5/5

O- Now this is an interesting beer. I had no idea what to expect. I thought there would be too much or too little chocolate. The two flavors actually blend well together. Others have said that you need to warm it a bit to get more of the chocolate notes and I would agree. I am very surprised. 4.5/5
