Poured on tap at the brewpub into a snifter glass.

A real gorgeous colored crystal clear body. Deep copper brown, with excellent clarity. Faint tan collar presented, and some bubbly creamy character. Very good looker.

Solid bouquet and quite different. Mellow tartness and a mix of faint toffee, and very complimenting sweet cinnamon. Hints at chewy winter warmer like clove and cherry spice warmth, and clove controlled heat. Very interesting if a little odd.

First sip brings an unexpected interesting surprise and take. Big toast brown ale like notes of bread dark crust, with a viscous body. Mild tartness with some real nice bouncing complimentary flavors. Red wine vinegars and matching brown sugars, with a nice toasty pop on the finish. Slightly wet but workable and not detracting or weakening the flavors.

A real nice take on the style that pulls off, very interesting and enjoyable.

From bottle to Hardywood snifter...

A. Pours a startlingly clear, deep ruby. A quarter finger of cream colored head rises up and then recedes slowly, vanishing completely about halfway through the session. Color on this is beautiful.

S. Very interesting indeed. The expected lush, red wine notes provide effervescence while oaky vanilla provides a velvety baseline. In a pleasant surprise, there is also a fairly assertive roasted malt quality here, providing hints of toasted caramel in the bouquet.

T. Red wine, dark cherry, vanilla, oak tannins, funk, sherry vinegar, and toasted biscuit.

M. Sweet on the front, brightly sour across the mid, and then a drying, vinous, toasty resolution. Highly complex and very enjoyable.

O. This is an excellent flanders red, distinctive for its assertive malt bill and bold tannic oakiness. While flavorful, there is a lightness here that makes it quite enjoyable. It doesn't singe the tastebuds, it arrives and gracefully exits as the swallow indicates. I'm not sure if this is barrel aged or not, but there is a semi-sweet red wine character to this that is really nicely done. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for Bluejacket's sour program.
