We stay with the German wheat beer theme for our Fall seasonal, and much like it’s Summertime sister, Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen has a unique banana and spicy clove character but this time paired with a chewy, bready (dare we say banana bread) malt backbone. Again, we hop this German wheat beer with Hallertau and Tettnanger hops.

16 ounce can poured into a Duvel tulip glass.
L---Massive, soapy tan head. Gradually faded and left thick lacing. medium/dark brown color that cannot be seen through.
S---Yeasty esters & alcohol. Strong clove.
T---Banana bread, as advertised. Very mild spiciness.
F---Very carbonated and airy. Medium bodied. No alcohol heat.
O---A good effort by a good brewery. They're not great, but they're solid, like this beer.

Aroma isn't overpowering but there's clove,banana, spice,yeast.
Taste is stronger than aroma ,alcohol seems strong despite low abv. Banana and clove dominate in a positive way.
Not my favorite from them , usually this is a favorite brewery of mine but this is still worth a try

Look: It pours brown with a full light brown head. Head retention is excellent.
Smell: It has aromas of chocolate bread, and caramel. There are some low aromas of bananas and clove. There are some doughy notes that are intertwined throughout the aromas.
Taste: There are dough like flavors with caramel and chocolate. It has low banana and clove flavors. There are some very low herbal elements well in the background.
Feel: It has a medium body with some creaminess.
Overall, I really like the chocolate flavors that were intertwined with the doughy and bready notes. For my tastes a little more banana and clove would have been great.

$ 3.00 (Including tax)/16 oz can ($ 0.188) from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. Reviewed 2/8/19.
Undated can. In reefer at distributor. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.5.
Body – Brown and murky.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.6 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, high density, average retention, diminishing to an irregular two to eight mm ring and a rocky partial layer.
Lacing – A few very tiny islands, so basically none.
First pour – Medium brown, hazy.
Aroma – 4 – Very malt forward followed by banana.
Flavor – 3.5 - Less malty than the nose suggests. A bit of clove not noted in the nose and just a hint of banana. No alcohol (5.2% ABV) flavor. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 3.5 – A pleasing take on dunkelweizens, with the flavors less pronounced but better blended. I’d not be averse to drinking this again.

Dark amber color, thinner head. Certainly pick-up some dark wheat / Bavarian pretzel notes as well as a mild clove spice, but just felt a little meek and watered down. Not bad but needs to round-out the flavors a bit more.

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company "Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen"
"1 PINT" can without production codes or freshness dating
Notes via stream of consciousness: I've re-cleaned a weizen glass so that I'd be sure it was "beer clean" and the head retention wouldn't be affected in any way. It poured a very hazy / lightly cloudy deep russet brown body with orange highlights beneath a three-finger thick head of foam. I had to wait for it to settle a bit so I could get the rest of the beer in. The aroma is sweetish and phenolic with caramel and clove and banana. It's a touch spicy and earthy as well. A lot of dunkleweizens have a limited aroma for some reason but not this one. Very nice. Just enough, it's not overblown. The flavor follows and it's really not that dark - sometimes they can be a little too dark and you seem to lose the yeast character within the malt but that's not the case here. It's nicely malty with wheat and caramel and a light apple fruitiness that's then softly backed by yeasty clove and a dusting of spice. A light edge of tartness helps to balance it along with a low level bitterness and yeasty spiciness and it finishes mostly dry and peppery. Looking back the head has held pretty well and the lacing is nice as well; not as nice as some hefeweizens I've sampled but still good. It's medium bodied and gently effervescent and crisp. I'm guessing the carbonation level is somewhere around 2.8 volumes of CO2 whereas a standard beer is more like 2.5; so it's not as carbonated as most of the hefeweizens from Germany but it's close. Overall, very nicely done and well balanced. Worth trying.

DATE: September 30, 2017... OCCASION: post apple-fest at Jill and Austin's... GLASSWARE: Schneider Edel-Weisse pokal... a dark brown body emits enough light to reveal bubbly activity that manifests in the massive, off-white three-finger blanket of foam... eventually, cave scrawls articulate lacing across its sky... clove and banana, some allspice and sunflower seed--a thick earthiness pervades, while the hops offer a vague citrus and pine... the dough is aromatic and sweet... first sip buzzes with a mellow activity, while smoothly finishing at the throat... this couldn't be more easy-drinking... the dunkel aspect adds a tea-like consistency... the banana and clove combination is bookended by lightly hopped citrus and doughy bread malts that are fresh and aromatic... a winner that reeks of autumn, with its dank earthiness...

Poured into a standard pint glass: color is dense copper to light amber, head is light tan with fine bubbles; head presents 1/2 inch thick then dissipates to a top and ring.
Smell is light, very subtle weizen yeast, feint breadiness.
Taste is deeper in flavor: light caramel sweetness, then some feint breadiness and quick transition to a weizen yeast flavor profile of banana, light clove and dry spiciness.
Mouthfeel is crisp, well carbonated and a little thin for a brew that could/can be a little thicker with wheat and bread fullness.
Overall a good beer with a thinner flavor and feel than similar brews in this style.
