Evil Genius "Hop King Imperial India Pale Ale"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BORN ON: 2015/01/12"
Apparently contract brewed by Thomas Hooker Brewing Company, Bloomfield, CT
$1.99 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA

Notes: Nice appearance but the head retention and lacing could certainly be better. The slight haze to the deep gold/light amber body is completely acceptable as it's probably due to dry hopping. The aroma is hoppy with pungent citrus, pine, and floral notes. It's pleasant but perhaps not as bold as it might be given the designation "Imperial". The flavor offers a balanced mix of straightforward grainy malt, resinous-piney and citrusy hops, and bold bitterness. It teeters between sweetish malt upfront and brash piney bitterness in the finish, leaving the middle as its "sweet-spot". It finishes bone dry, herbal, piney, and even minty at times. Again, the hop flavors could be a touch more pronounced, but that would just be a bonus - they're just fine as they are. The "Imperial" designation is certainly accounted for in the alcohol, which is clearly present, although the percentage is not listed on the label. Overall it's a fairly brutish beer, which is not to say it's bad in any way, just that it's quite aggressive. A bit more balance between the malt, bitterness and alcohol would really allow it to shine.

The head is best described from the three separate pours to give me "a proper pint." This settles to minute layer of bubbles, but leaves a cross between blanketing and spotty lace. The liquid is golden and cloudy.

A combination of floral and grapefruit rind smelling hops.

Surprisingly well-balanced for a DIPA. Solid pale malt start where one can detect the moderate toast of the kilned malt. The hop is the predominant flavor thereafter without much distinction--simply bitter. Full bodied which is accentuated by the lower effervescence.

I think Evil Genus's attempt into the imperial beers is a worthy first effort.
Though the appearance isn't with your basic boring pour. That meaning a light head and no carbs. The color was a tad light bordering close to golden straw.
The aroma was very nice with some floral and piney notes.
The taste is resinous and oily hops. Some hop flavor pokes through with floral and earthy taste. You could almost taste or sense warming alcohol on the palate.
Finishes dry and bitter.

Golden hue with little carbonation. Slight scent of hops and citrus. Deep mosaic and pale taste. Too much pale.

I enjoyed this bottle chilled in a glass purchased at Wegmans in a mix-a-six

The color is brilliant golden with very hazy loo and 2 finger of white head with fine bead and lace that sticks. The smell is very lightly fruity at first with some slight citrus quality coming through as it warms with a subtle mango-like tropical scent. The feel is good with mildly sweet entry and medium bitterness with slight astringency and medium high carbonation with light alcohol and semi-dry finish.

The taste is very good with tangy and light tropical hop flavor with slight herbal quality in the background and slight sweet malt in the middle with a lingering peppery quality from the hops with mild alcohol influence and a mostly dry finish with bitterness increasing in the taste toward the end. Overall I thought this was not bad, there is more bitterness than hop flavor but it fits the style with good freshness and nothing off to speak of -decent taste and good for what it is.

Interesting brewer.

A: Hazed and dark amber, bit of dotty lace, not much retention.

S: Almost an English or New England edition on the nose, which is quite good, with combination of floral, cedar, wood shavings, and grapefruit rind.

T:Follows smell. Between sweet malt, caramel and bitter, and the see saw to the bitter finish, it's well-balanced for a DIPA. Toasty, rich.

F: Good to very good body, feel, finish

I'd have another. I was in mood for DIPA and this filled the spot nicely. Not quite as refreshing, bright, or nuanced as the best (Stone, Carton, Green Flash).

Pours a light orange with little head. It's clear with no sediment.
Smells really awesome. Grapefruit and resin stickiness. Definitely smells like citra hops.
Taste is bitter all around. Really different from the aroma, in a good way though. Medium bodied and kind of sticky. I was expecting it to be dryer. But it's got a wet feel with a slight malt backbone. A very hoppy beer all around.
Overall this is a good beer. Impressed with this brewery so far.
