12 oz bottle

Medium almond amber, nice looking fine bubble head, film and fine scattered lacing.

Mild grainy hop nose

Soft and smooth on the tongue, with ample biscuity malts and drying and resiny hops in the mid and later sections. Over 8 % well hidden, we'll crafted and worth a try. (289 characters)

Evil Genius "Hop King Imperial India Pale Ale"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BORN ON: 2015/01/12"
Apparently contract brewed by Thomas Hooker Brewing Company, Bloomfield, CT
$1.99 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA

Notes: Nice appearance but the head retention and lacing could certainly be better. The slight haze to the deep gold/light amber body is completely acceptable as it's probably due to dry hopping. The aroma is hoppy with pungent citrus, pine, and floral notes. It's pleasant but perhaps not as bold as it might be given the designation "Imperial". The flavor offers a balanced mix of straightforward grainy malt, resinous-piney and citrusy hops, and bold bitterness. It teeters between sweetish malt upfront and brash piney bitterness in the finish, leaving the middle as its "sweet-spot". It finishes bone dry, herbal, piney, and even minty at times. Again, the hop flavors could be a touch more pronounced, but that would just be a bonus - they're just fine as they are. The "Imperial" designation is certainly accounted for in the alcohol, which is clearly present, although the percentage is not listed on the label. Overall it's a fairly brutish beer, which is not to say it's bad in any way, just that it's quite aggressive. A bit more balance between the malt, bitterness and alcohol would really allow it to shine. (1,332 characters)

-Spiegelau ipa glass. Disclaimer and disclosure. Bottle neck date 2015.01.09. Consumed 2015.07.07.

A: Soapy edging, one inch, white head with dull yellow tones. Pale orange with a generally good clarity, and a full rush of carbonation that was steady and strong. Stratified ring lacing down the glass.

S: Soft aroma, freshly cut grass, dry grapefruit skin. Weak aroma, no persistance, identity, or complexity. Not much of a pale ale ale let alone imperial standard, but could be attributed to 6 month layover.

T: Flavor was grassy, dull citrus, good bitterness level, but shallow complexity, only bittering, not really flavorful. Dull metallic hints, stale lemon peel, thin substance.

M: Light bodied, stale citrus, really lackluster, no crispness.

O: Overall a six month layover may have attributed to some deterioration and evaluation. I have had many a ipa 6-9months past bottling with little or no fall off in nose or flavor, sadly this is not one of them. Stale hopping, thin malting, lifeless mouthful and just a bittering aspect with no real flavor made this a drainpour. I usually like this brewery's offerings, do not think a fresher bottle would fair better then a 78 for me, seems like a style filler with a stale dry finish. (1,246 characters)
