I wanted something I had never tried and I love IPAs so I bought a variety case. I tried an Evil Eye PA.
Appearance - Weak head, little or no carbonation, cloudy.

Smell - This was the best part of the beer. Citrusy - assumed it would be a good tasting, mildly fruity IPA - wrong

Taste - 1 second of ok, and straight to dry tongue and a bad after taste. My brain did not want to believe it... so I took another swig. Now I'm thinking $45 for this. Hope the others in the variety earn their keep.

Mouthfeel - Very thin. Instant dry tongue and absolutely not carbonation present.

Overall - Poor attempt. Too bad because the Brewery name and the name of the beer are so cool that this would have been a regular if it had tasted good. At 6% I hoped it would be a not-too-big beer to add into the rotation. After three or four sips I set it down and could not finish it.

Born on 11-06-2013. 12 oz bottle

Pours a dark, clear copper amber with a foamy off white head that has long lasting retention and thick sheets of lace. Generic nose of toasted malts, biscuit, straw. Flavor is more of an amber than IPA or APA, medium thick creamy body, sweet pale malt, dry earthy finish. Unpleasant long lasting fizzy bitterness. Forgettable.

12oz bottle into pint glass

A - A Nice Orange amber, kind of hazy.
S -a bit grapefuity and overly sweet. There was also a hint of something that smelled bad.
T - Standard IPA flavors. pine, grapefruit etc.. but it wasn't as hoppy as I like.
M - Smooth, medium body and medium carbonation. Dry finish.

O - I was put off by the smell of the beer as I went to drink it. It smelled a bit like rotten vegetables. I couldnt quite put a finger on it. Strangely it didnt taste as it smelled. Mouthfeel was good and the finish was good. Imparted a nice light bitter finish.

First beer in years I could not finish on my first one. As a fan of IPAs the hopes were high for this but it didn't deliver on any criteria. Bought a draft on server recco in a Nonic glass. A: yellow orange with thin head. Not impressed. S: wet rotting vegetables with an orange or lemon peel on top. T: bitter splash on front of tongue that went to dry immediately. No malt balance. M: thin like a Coors Light. Water. O: not the worst beer I ever had but the worst IPA I had in years. Server didn't know anything and it was the only IPA on the menu so I had to go this way. I was off put buy the draft serve as the smell hit me immediately so it probably made my taste buds run in fear. Pass

Ouch. This is bad. Very bad. Hairspray galore with a lingering burn. Ouch, indeed. Any hop character is blown out by this off the wall flavor profile. Carbonation is way too full. Nasty stuff. First sip was okay. Everything after has been a complete disaster. Drain pour!

This brewery can't be open for much longer if they keep putting out crap like this.

Shiny copper body, excellent clarity, visible carbonation streams, topped by a thick finger of level bubbly snow white foam.

Pleasing inviting citrus -grapefruit, orange.

Brief flash of caramel sweetness is immediately overpowered by an astringent mix of bitter and cleaning solvent. Which lingers. For quite a while.

Looks great, smells good, but is quite unpleasant to taste. Back to the lab.

Had at a tasting with the brewer. I hope this was an old keg. No aroma whatsoever of hops. Very little in the way of hop taste either. Th bitterness was there but little else. If this is a better beer there is no excuse for a brewer not to eliminate this one from the tasting.

Poured into a new belgium glass, color is copper to amber, but cloudy and very murky and dense looking. Head is nice and dense and thick, laces well. Appearance lacks that crisp and clean look from a solid fermentation.

Smell is mixed, some vegetal hops with mild malt notes in the form of biscuit. Not over sweet but not a bright citrusy or piney hop note either.

Taste is over bittered all the way at the beginning with cloying mixed malt flavors, not caramel, but some lingering sweetness and breadiness that seems to not have aged well. The malt and hop mixture is just not well balanced.

Mouthfeel is cloying from over bittered front palate and the lingering sweetness from the malt profile.

Overall, a very bland IPA, mixed flavors don't present a clear scent, taste, and mouthfeel - not to mention a cloudy presentation

Pours clear amber with a big frothy head. Nice lacing around glass.

Smell is light herbal hops, some pine, grapefruit peel, and grains.

Taste is a quick hint at floral hops, grains, mild sweetness, mild bitterness.

Light in body, little carbonation.

Not a great IPA by any means. Refreshing.

12oz bottle poured into a pint

Pours a dull orange with a huge ecru colored cap. Great retention with huge chunks of lace. Recedes in raindrop fashion, which is always a plus.

Initial whiff is of caramel. Some tangerine and orange with pine resin underneath. A little bit of tropical fruit pokes through, but not enough to overcome the malt bill. This is a pretty well-balanced IPA.

Caramel and lightly toasted bread hit the palate first and carry through the middle. Where did those fruity hops go? Pine bitterness and caramel in a balanced duel through the finish then a small burst of lemons.

Medium body with good carbonation. Smooth. A mild bitterness lingers but never really assaults the palate the way a west coast ipa should.

They boast a west coast ipa on the label, but this falls short. No in your face hops or assault of bitterness. This is an east coast ipa through and through and a pretty average one at that.

I am now committed to reducing, if not eradicating, my backlog of bottles. This one came from the Mix & Match Beer Singles selection at the Weis Markets Beer Garden in Lititz.

My pour was a little tipsy, as in I tipped up the bottle on the lip of the glass and let fly. Following a pseudo-cascade, I had two-plus fingers of dense, soapy, tawny head with good retention. Color was a deep-amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a very strong pine characteristic and I have no problem with that, as long as there is more to it than that in the flavor. Mouthfeel was medium. The flavor was much like Gertrude Stein's remark about Oakland that "There's no there, there." This had to rank as one of the blandest AIPAs that this hophead has consumed in a while. There was a faint bitterness, but it just was not very remarkable. Finish was semi-dry, slightly bitter, but still not getting the job done. I was really underwhelmed by this one.

Appearance: pours a clear dull orange color with a 2" head that lasts a while. Some lace paints the glass.

Smell: strong lemon zest and orange citrus dominate the aroma.

Taste: caramel, big tart lemon zest, orange, pear, and a moderate bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Very crisp from start to finish. The heavy tart lemon creates a bit of a mouth pucker on the first few swigs.

Overall: not that good of an IPA as the lemon is too dominate here.

A: Dense dirty orange coloring has a good deal of protein haze and sporadic carbonation release. Frumpy cottage cheese textured head is barley tinted and shows some resilience. Spongy band lacing.

S: Citrusy-pine and orange on the nose. A touch of fresh grapefruit with a decent level of awareness.

T: Flavor of sweet grains come first, musky damp citrus seem a bit old, damp, but still bitter with some orange and grapefruit flowery bitterness. Grainy, dry, almost pilsner like malting backbone but still shows a bit of washiness.

M: Light and frothy mouthful, bitter, with some musky hops. Maybe the hops are showing thier age or lack of respect in handling. Carbonation is light could use some tightening and crispness.

O: Overall due to lack of bottling info, it is hard to determine if this is after best consumption or just a bad usage and/or storage of materials. Very musky, old hop feeling, average C rated drinkability and excitement, a pass unless your a ticker.

On tap at Homegrown in Newark, DE.

This one pours a light gold-ish amber, with a quarter inch head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like bitter pine and not a whole lot else, maybe some grapefruit, and some vague sweetness.

This tastes like any other run of the mill IPA, unfortunately. Perfumy bitter hops, some pine, very little sweetness, no malt or other flavors, except for some kind booziness, which is weird since it's only 6% ABV.

This is medium bodied, crisp, and somewhat drinkable.

Not all that super interesting.

12 oz beer was poured into a pint glass. Bottle 11/6/13.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer and left some nice lacing on the glass. It is a pale orange color with good clarity and bubbles seen coming up through the glass. Nice lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Grassy hops, some grapefruit, some tangerine, toasted, and caramel malts.

Taste: Toasted malts, pale caramel malts, some citrus, and lingering weird bitterness. Bitterness lasts a while and is a bit overbearing.

Mouthfeel: Chewy, lingering weird bitterness and aftertaste, light bodied, and medium carbonation.

Overall: This beer has potential. The hops could be adjusted a little and this could be a good APA instead of an IPA.

A: Pours a copper-brown, cloudy with notable diffusion, off-white head, finger-thick with similar lacing.

S: Hop-forward scent, very abrupt with no lingering aromatics.

T: Hops are moderate and piney throughout, mild toasty-ness in the malts, finishes with a balance between the two.

O: Basic AIPA, what you would expect, would be a good for causal drinking with a moderate 6% abv.

Pours a clear deep gold producing 2+ fingers of frothy, white, somewhat lasting head that leaves clumpy & soapy webs of lace. Aroma is straightforward American IPA: caramel malt, citrus & floral hop notes. Taste is caramel malt sweetness forward but rapidly blending with citrus (lemon, grapefruit & tangerine), grass, pine & tea leafy hop notes before mid-sip & becoming predominantly bitter with an underlying sweetness by the finish but becoming intensely pine resinous & herbal bitter in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation, creamy, smooth & slick across the tongue with little spice or prickle.

Not the APA for which I'd hoped...

Pours a hazy copper colour with a respectable whitish head that has fair retention, but not stellar and no sign of residual lacing. Has a mild malt-forward aroma that has only a hint of faded hops despite being a newly purchase bottle. I don't see a brew date on the label, but there is no sign of fresh hops in the aroma despite their presence in the other bottles in this mixed 6.

There is far more flavour than any macro would offer, but less than I'd expected or hoped. Starts with a caramelized malt sweetness and moves rapidly to "moderate bitterness", albeit missing the typical hop spectrum i.e.no sign of citrus or tropical fruits or any other distinct APA elements.

Will buy more from this brewer and glad to see them starting up, but not an APA I'll rave about...

LOOK: Pours a hazed orange color with a large soapy head with good retention. Lace is left down the glass. Unfiltered IPA.

SMELL: Grains, husk, cooked veggies and stewed hops. Not the best aroma. Grainy and course, perhaps even slightly home-brew like.

TASTE: Delicate pine and earthy bitterness rides a wave of malt sweetness with a slight caramel taste. Just a touch of nutty malts in the finish. Unrefined and pretty raw, this drinks like a standard home brew IPA recipe.

FEEL: Smooth and decently carbonated. Actually drinks like a smoothie. The feel on this beer is great and makes it much more drinkable then some of the enamel stripping IPA style beer on the market.

OVERALL: This is an East Coast IPA and definitely a decent stab at the style. Probably prefer the other IPA style beers from Evil Genius, but this was not a bad beer.

12 oz bottle into tulip. no bottled-on date.

A: a hazed orange body. pours with a ton of head. cannot even fit the whole bottle in my glass. retention is terrific as is the clumps of lacing left behind. not as clear as a west coast IPA should be, but certainly a good looking brew.

S: smells bitter. faint orange peel undertones. a little bit of soft vanilla bean undertones. either from the grist or the yeast as plenty clearly made into the bottle.

T: slightly floral, lemon peel is an obvious flavor. very bitter, astringent really. it takes over the palate, the bitterness that is. finish cleans up quickly, sans some lingering bitterness. also a little vegetal flavor lingers as well.

M: fizzy. enough carb, but not overwhelming. medium bodied.

D: not as bad as everyone has been saying it is, however that being said, still needs some work before it gets to good/great status. while I feel like this was a pretty fresh bottle, there were a few defects (the DMS/vegetal finish) that need some refinement.

Smell: Hops, with a touch of lemon.

Feel: Light to medium bodied.

A3 a murky orange in color with 2 fingers of detergent like head. decent amount of lacing.
S3.25 smells of grassy/floral hops and caramel.
T2.75 the first flavor i get is citrusy, then a weird vegetable like bitterness. my guess is this isn't very fresh. i get a kind of bologna-like aftertaste, almost reminiscent of vienna style lagers.
M3 high carbonation, lighter medium body. too carbonated for the style in my opinion.
O2.75 overall, i am not impressed. there is a slight oxidation taste, so i can't really blame the beer itself, rather the store i bought it from/their distributor for not pulling it from shelves.

edit: emailed the brewery and they sent me a replacement six pack within a few days. re-review:

A3.5 a clean amber/orange pour with 2 fingers of head which dissipated quickly and gave off some nice lacing
S3.25 lots of caramel is present as well as grassy hops.. looks like much hasn't changed from the smell.
T3.5 a very sweet bready profile, refreshing in taste, grassy bitterness with a slight citrus grapefruit-like aftertaste.
M3.5 medium body, moderate carbonation. crisp and refreshing
O3.5 not a bad beer by any means, obviously WAY different fresh than how i originally had it. also, gotta hand it to the brewery for being awesome and mailing out replacement beers. totally wasn't their fault, but they took action - so i definitely gotta appreciate that.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a short off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, citrus and earthy hops.

T: The taste starts out with a strong but not over-powering earthy hops bitterness. Then some mildly sweet flavors of caramel and citrus come in. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, it’s not a bad beer but there are definitely several other beer in the style that I would choose first.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed orange-amber color with a huge thick off white head. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to give a nice level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is somewhat light and is a mix of some tropical fruit, citrus hop, and some bready aromas. The tropical fruits are of a mango and tangerine nature with all the aromas mixed with a light pine aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a light caramel and citrus hop flavor. Mixed with these are some light bready flavors. Toward the middle a pine and herbal hop flavor come to the tongue drowning out the caramel and citrus. This pine hop flavor grows stronger more toward the end of the taste, leaving in the end a decent bitter herbal-pine hop flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer and carbonation are both on the average side. Not bad for the style as it is a good compromise of carbonation and thickness which suits well the hop and bready flavors of the brew.

Overall – A pretty decent IPA. It leaves a rather nice bitter pine and herbal/grassy hop flavor to linger on the tongue.

My first one from evil genius and I'm not really impressed. Oh it's not bad, just needs some work. What I disliked was the abrasive and bitter finish for beer lacking a tad in flavor.
On my pour the beer produced a tall head with good rentention and some lacing but the carbs were light and the burnished orange amber body was hazy which could be simply a result of chill haze.
Aroma was light with very little hop bouquet, hardly a WCIPA in my opinion. It is though rather malt and sweet.
Taste is of sutle hops and malts with a substaintial bitterness.
Not bad but really not to style.
