For Honolulu, this place is top notch. Great selection of beer. The ambience, service and food were all excellent. It was pricey, but this is Hawaii. Would recommend to anyone living or staying on Oahu. A $2.00 bus ride from Waikiki and a half mile walk gets you there.

Amazing beer bar. One of the best in the world
No longer live in Hawaii, but when I'm visiting I will always make it into REAL a gastropub. One of only a handful of true beer bars in Hawaii. The first and best of them all, although Brew'd and P+J are doing a great job as well.

I was in Hawaii recently for my honeymoon, and while on Oahu I made it a point to visit this place. I had read and heard nothing but good things about REAL, and it did not disappoint!

Really great/warm atmosphere. Very friendly and laid back. A nice space in the Ward area of Honolulu. Two floors, bar downstairs, and more dining space on the second floor. Indoor and outdoor seating. They have 29 (30?) rotating taps, including a couple of nitro options. A nice variety of domestic craft, locals (Maui Brewing and Big Island Brewhaus both make very good to great beer), and imports (especially Belgians). A very nice bottle selection as well. If I had to take a shot in the dark, I'd guess they have a couple of hundred different bottled beers to choose from.

Service was excellent. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Willing to make suggestions or answer questions about most of the beers. My understanding is that every server at this place is a Certified Beer Server through the Cicerone program.

We also ate while we were there, as we needed something to help us soak up all of the excellent beers we were drinking. I ordered poutine and some pork sliders, and my wife ordered mac'n'cheese and some portabello sliders. Everything was delicious, and fresh. Food is served small plate style, but reasonably priced.

I cannot recommend this place more if you're in Hawaii and on the island of Oahu. You will not find anything else like this in the islands. A top notch craft beer bar all around.

Great place to come with friends and enjoy some good beers and good food. It does get crowded on Fri/Sats though.

Beer: In my opinion, Real has the best quality beers on tap on O'ahu. They have 30 taps and they get some good stuff that you won't find anywhere else. The prices are high, I've left here with $100+ tabs, it's easy to overspend with all the good stuff on tap (not to mention bottles - they have bottles that I've never seen in Hawai'i before). They generally have bottles of Cantillon.

Food: I love the food here: gastropub-style dishes, mainly smaller plates. I recommend the bacon (it's awesome!) and the poutine.

The atmosphere is good, not too hard, not too loud - they generally have some live music each week on the bottom floor. They also have some seats outside if you are there earlier in the day, or want a little more quiet.

Service is great, they really know their stuff and are very friendly and attentive.

No longer living in Hawaii, I miss this place and will definitely be back when I'm in town. Stop by if you're in Honolulu.

Great place to meet friends and try new and exotic beers. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They have a good selection of beer here. You won't find Budweiser Beer here. The food was okay, nothing to rave about. Of course, it all about the beer here. I got to try Surliga Bay Imperial IPA beer and like it very much. Beer prices ranged from the most expensive at $32.00 a bottle to about $4.00 for a glass. They had live entertainment. Overall, it was worth the money spent. Better come early to get good seats.

Wonderful gastropub with a casual family friendly atmosphere. An amazing amount of craft beers on tap and an even larger amount of canned and bottled craft beers.

The wait help is very knowledgeable about the beer, and are able to give great suggestions. They will even give you a sample of anything on tap if you are curious.

The food is a bit pricy, but I would say that it is quite a few steps above your standard bar fare.

I highly recommend this fine establishment. You will not find a bar in Hawaii with a larger/better selection of craft beer.

A beer-nerd oasis in paradise, as it were. Situated next to a big Japanese supermarket a couple minutes drive from Waikiki beach, this is a still-young (1st anniversary later this month) beer bar with a good array of taps, including 2 hand-pump handles that I saw, though I don't think any casks were up at the time of my visit. Lots of Cali brews on today, including several from Sierra Nevada and Moylan's (they'd just had a Moylan's event earlier in the week), and NC Old Raspy on nitro. A couple of local brews on offer, but really, that's not the main appeal of this place. Behind the bar are a row of coolers, filled with bottles unlikely to be seen in many other places in HI, including a couple of Mikkeller brews, Jolly Pumpkins, St. Bernardus, and wonder of wonders, a number of Cantillons! Needless to say, I took advantage of the opportunity to drink a cool bottle of Iris. Food seems serviceable, but then that's hardly why one should come here. Good craft beer in a town that still has a lot to learn about the subject. (As I was informed that one of the Shelton brothers is a co-owner of the place, its unusual focus began to make more sense. As did its choice as one of last year's Zwanze Day sites.)

It doesn't get much better in Hawaii than here, great selection and lots of beer (compared to the rest of Hawaii). good food and they have just begun doing small beer tastings, good place to meet some more beer geeks such as myself. Tuesdays are Tap Attack, where they have a few brews from other breweries around the world.

So I've been anticipating the launch of this gastropub since I first caught wind of it a few months ago. Knowing the men behind the business and their love of all things beer and food, I knew Hawaii was going to be in good hands. This is the sort of place that Hawaii has been lacking in the beer community and I for one am glad to help fill that void with my patronage.

When I first arrived, I was surprised by the ample room that the lanai encompasses and the shade provided as about seven other people and myself waited for the doors to open. At about 10 minutes after 2 o'clock in the afternoon the doors were opened and we were greeted with a warm welcome! The excitement was too much for this beer geek as I scanned the decor of vibrant warm colors to my right and beer tap handles and friendly smiles behind the bar to my left! Heaven on Earth? I think so. If your in any way a fan of beer or just dabble a bit with them, this place will not disappoint and the knowledgeable staff (Troy, Tony & Jesse) will steer you into your perfectly mated liquid friend. Hell, even friendly patrons are quick to recommend a style for you as well (IPA, Stout, Porter...they've got them all). It's great to see a flowering community interact so well with each other. It warms by beer geek heart. Just to give you an idea of what they have, I'll list the beers I enjoyed that day:

1) I wanted to go local with my first beer but I had had them all before so I went w/ Something I have never seen in bottles before, let alone on tap and that was....Mikkeller's Tiger Baby: Open Windows Open Hills - An American Pale Ale w/ Mango & Passion fruit....Close enough to the islands for my tasting. It was a perfect entry beer. I got two other people to try one and they also enjoyed it! Yay!

2) Mikkeller's Sorachi Ace Single Hop - The beauty with this beer is that it's brewed just with the Sorachi Ace hop from Japan, so it showcases the lemon flavor that the hop produces....it was wonderful as well.

3) Went to the bottle selection here and tried the Mikkeller/3 Floyds Boogoop Buckwheat/Barley wine. These are hard to find on island and luckily I was about to wash one down. This was so awesome! It had great hop profile, but the aftertaste was the thing that shined with this beer...it was as if my tongue was encased with marshmallows...I'm guessing that 10.4% abv was playing on my tongue. Highly recommend this! So good, I was bottle sharing with friends and new firends at the bar!

4) Last but not least was the Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek 2009 - Another rare find on island and probably anywhere on the mainland too. Lambics in nature are dry and sour and with a Kriek (just means cherries are added), the fruit is being showcased. Cantillon is a highly rated Belgium brewery who are world renowned for their lambics and I was in heaven drinking this one. Such a rare find. My mouth was thanking me.

So that sums up my beer journey on opening day. Although the kitchen won't be opened until around June 15th, I'm sure as much detail that has gone into the beer selection will ring true with that of the pub grub. I have no doubt at all that the food will more than compliment the outstanding beer. I was highly impressed with the selection and the care that each beer was given as it came to which vessel it was served in. Like I said before, the guys know their stuff and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations if your a bit weary of the selection, remember... Beer is your friend and Real a Gastropub is a friend in waiting. Hit them up now!

Finally! This is what hawaii has been needing forever! 24 taps over 200 different bottles, I'm in heaven! When you walk in you feel like you are in the bottom of a beer glass. the former Tropics has transfomed into a beautiful bar. A large 12 seat bar and tables inside as well as outside. Yep you can drink on their lanai! When I went they had live music and if I remember correctly th owner said they will have live music every night. (Jazz, blues, bluegrass). Some of the staff is knowledgable with beer and if not they were happy to find out more info or give a small taster. The kitchen is not open yet but the chalk board behind the bar says it will be open the week of june 15th. I'm quite sure I will be taking many more trips to Real, especially with all the great food I've been hearing about.
